Prescriptions add to the cost of this drug. Are there other alternatives available?

I am not sure why it is a prescription medicine. The alternatives available are not really an option - you would simply have to swallow too many tablets and it would not be cost effective.

Metanx is a Medical Food and requires a prescription as well as medical supervision. You won't buy this at the health food store. I take it for diabetes in the hope of avoiding (or slowing the progression of) diabetic peripheral neuropathy. My Podiatrist swears by it and had me start once I was diagnosed with diabetes (type 2). I am honestly not sure why some insurance companies don't cover this. Mine does cover; but the co-pay is high.
