In May of 1996 I sustained nerve damage when the tips of 2 fingers were torn off in a car accident. The plastic surgeons I saw didn't understand nerve damage and constantly accused me of wanting pain meds because I was addicted to them. I was not, and in spite of the pain I quit taking them in Oct 1996. I then went to a PM doc in Jan 1997. My opiate nightmare started. This doc had me up to 24 Vicodin ES a day. That scared me so when I wanted off them he put me on Methadone. That was a bad idea. I couldn't wean off Mdone. The PM doc panicked and didn't know what to do. One night an idea came into my mind. I asked him to switch me back to short acting opiates and I would wean off them. I should have been off everything in 4 to 5 months. But I became stuck or dependent on 1 Darvocet a day. It took 3 years for my brain to heal from that Methadone, and I was finally off everything in Jan 2001. It was to be short lived. In Feb 2002 I developed what the neurologists called Spontaneous Spinal Nerve damage. My spinal cord is damaged between discs C2 & C3. I still had some pain in my right hand from my cut fingers, and now this damage caused my whole right arm to hurt. Badly at times. I was on Vic ES again. After 3 years I needed more Vics than this doc was willing to give me. Since he was also a Sub doc he recommended I go on Subutex. He said I could take it for pain and dependency and I'd never have to increase the dose. That much was true. However, he lied when I asked about long term side effects. He didn't tell me it would give me a super resistance to other opiates. I was fine until Dec 2009 when I needed them. After 1 year I required 300 mg a day of any other opiate to kill pain. By Dec 2010 I had enough and attempted to detox myself, as I had done before. I failed miserably. The wds were never ending. In March of 2011, I came back to Subutex. I needed it for pain. And here I am. I take 14 mg of Subutex a day, and I keep having problems with the generic versions of this drug. Thanks for Listening.read less
