For what reason did you want to give melatonin to your son?
See http://www.drugs.com/melatonin.html for more information.

I am giving my son who is also 11 1.5mg of melatonin about 30 minutes before bed. It has worked wonders while we are awaiting his sleep study. He is able to fall asleep faster and has less waking episodes at night.
There are few side effects to melatonin and allergic reactions seem to be few. Always consult the doctor for any questions and monitor the effectiveness

Don't be scared because melatonin is natural. It can be a helpful aid and its not harmful. Just start him low & check for your best result. Its not like taking Ambian or Lunesta. Its worth a try: you don't want to use prescription drugs if you can help it. He's so young. Just try the smallest dose & go from there. I wouldn't go higher than 3 for a youngster that age. fThere is also a delayed release melatonin. Check with the Dr. on that. Cheers.
