Hey chickpea,
Desipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, can cause anxiety in some people. If the problem persists or becomes worse with continued use, you'll need to contact the doctor. Have you tried any of the newer antidepressants such as Zoloft or Lexapro?
Best wishes,
Laurie

I did well on Lexapro for 6 or 7 years, and in trying to wean myself off slowly, ran into difficulty and relapsed without being able to get relief from my former dose. Thereafter, I tried Pristiq and Luvox and felt they were too activating. Pamelor more recently made me emotionally labile and so Desipramine was the alternative offered. I have great difficulty adjusting to new meds and have been told that I should use benzo's to help me adjust. I resist using the benzos out of fear of dependence and not liking the tired zoned out feeling. I think my shrink may be losing patience with me as well and I may just give in and use the benzo's along with the desipramine until I give it a fair trial. I wish I new what normal felt like. Last week I was away on a very active vacation I was off all meds and was hardly symptomatic.

After being home for the past several days, I felt the GAD creeping back so I decided to give the desipramine ( I had left over from a previous trial) a second try. After only two days of taking 25 mg, I feel anxious and a bit depressed. I will see my psychiatritst this Tuesday and am worried about
the response I will get since I took myself off the Pamelor, went without anything and am now back on the Desipramine. Frustrated and most probably frustrating my physician as well.
Just be honest with the doc. He needs to know everything that has gone on so he can re evaluate the situation. Taking a benzo for a short time until the other med begins to work is not a bad plan. Just be prepared to taper when the time comes. If the desipramine doesn't work, you could always go back on the Lexapro or something similar like Celexa. Just a thought. Good luck.
Thanks for your kind response. I will get back to this forum after my appt on Tuesday and let you know how things went.
