I went to the doctor with what I thought was bronchitis, chest X-Ray showed pneumonia. Shots and meds and went home, on Friday. Tuesday my doctor called and told me they found a problem with my heart, but no other information! Later that day I received oxygen and a new prescription for myq blood pressure. Does anyone have info on this and what causes it? What I read scared me to death! However, my doctor doesn't seem that concerned with it!

Cardiomegaly just means an enlarged heart. Do you have breathing problems? Cardiomegaly is often seen in folks with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or after years of chronic bronchitis and asthma. When you have a chronic breathing problem like asthma or chronic bronchitis the heart has to work harder to get oxygenated blood out to the body tissues and organs so therefore over time it can become enlarged from working so hard.

Dear auntniknik,
I am so sorry to hear you are feeling poorly. I don't have any information for you pertaining to this, but I just wanted to say that I am sorry for your fears and to encourage you. Please try not to be too fearful. Sometimes the internet can be more of an enemy than a friend if we go after things. Remember, people generally only post when they have experienced bad news or effects. Good news, side effects, etc does not usually make it to the 'net.
Please take care,
~Jillynnie
Hey there Jillynnie. Very good point. and also very true. Far to often, the negatives are shown, and the positives can take a back seat. Shutting down early tonight, bit tired, (what else is knew huh? :0) and going to put up my feet, watch some golf (dvd) or catch the Tigers/Rangers, baseball, playoffs, now still in a rain delay) Oh, heres one. Doctor-you'll make it to 60. Patient-But, doc, I am 60! Doctor- See, I told you so... Goodnight to everyone, be well, and lets hope and wish the best for one and all. Ha! care for a cuppa? Good night then.
sweet pledge,
you made me snort! lol My dog looked up at me. That was so funny. :)
I'll take that cuppa in the morning. Trying to cut down on my caffeine. (does a zebra have stripes?!) well, wish me luck anyway.
Love ya!
~Jillynnie
Good Thursday morning to you Mary. I know you've no time for a cuppa so wishing you the best, have a safe drive, and we'll chat another time.
Mary, you're in my thoughts and prayers, but I haven't felt like being on the Internet! I am getting more strength back slowly! The oxygen seems to be helping. I don't have to use it all the time! I have had chronic bronchitis since I was a child, plus I found out my grand mother and 4 of her 6 sisters had congestive heart failure and lived 20+ years with it! I only worry about no insurance and being able to have the treatments I need. My dad had 6 bypass surgery! They thought it was 4, but when they got in they found two more blockages! That means it runs on both sides of my family. My mother, her dad and brother all died from cancer, so when I read Cardiomegaly could be heart cancer it scared me! It is now Thrusday morning and I have had time to process and I'm no longer worried! Just wanted you to know I've been thinly of you! Love ya, Niki

Hi auntniknik,
Everyone had positive things to say to you, Mary, pledge and DzooBaby all.
And your doc isn't all the concerned, so perhaps you are worried because of what you read on the web?
I'm certainly not trying to minimize what you are going through my friend!!
I too would be frightened, yet especially if your doc isn't worried, perhaps you shouldn't be either?
I just got over a nasty case of pneumonia myself this summer. It most certainly does seem to make ones heart work harder!! I recall that my heart felt like it was just pounding quite hard and I felt a bit breathless. Do you feel that way as well?
I shall keep you in me prayers niknik. Best wishes to you, and please keep us updated on this?
Your friend,
Good morning sweet lemon. tad early, coffee is just made, hot, and its a dark roast this morning, filled with caffeine :-0) Fresh bagels, croissants, along with apple fritters and cinnamon rolls. Marys of to the races this morn, so we'll set something aside for her. Have a great day sweet and for anyone who might be reading this theres plenty of goodies to go around, feel free to enjoy and if you've got the urge for seconds, certainly help yourself.
... well thank God for pledge coffee, I really NEED the caffiene this morning, no sleep, forgot my meds last night, again!!!
Golfing today pledge? Hope your weather is fine today!!
Lara
xoxo

Hi DzooBaby, you always have such good advice! I appreciate your consistent contribution to this site! I wish I could be more like that, but the older I get the harder it becomes! All this unexpected stuff keeps getting in my way! Have a great Thrusday and enjoy your weekend! Love ya, Niki
It is pretty common and that is probably why your Dr isnt too worried. He probably expected it if you have had long term breathing problems. Just try to take care of yourself the best you can. Eat right, take your meds, get a little exercise, that's about all any of us can do.
Can't walk right now because my hip is so inflamed? My biggest problem is not being able to walk enough! I've hardly been out of bed for almost a year. It is killing me, but unless the Reclast works and my bones get where they don't crumble so I can have some surgery I don't know what is going to happen! I am on Oxygen, at least at night. I used it a lot yesterday, don't know if this rainy weather had anything to do with it or not, but I felt bad all day. I feel much better today. Before the pneumonia started this time I was feeling very good and was up most of the day for a week of beautiful fall weather! When my husband is making decisions he likes to hear me play the piano, and I was able to sit for about an hour to play for him. The scoliosis is so bad I have trouble holding my backup, especially on a piano bench, so I had to stop playing for church after 30+ years! I feel lost!
Hi Aunt, DzooBaby is right on! I just want to expand a little. Cardiomegaly is not really a disease, but rather a symptom of another condition. Like DzooB says an enlarged heart. Some times the heart enlarges and becomes weak for unknown reasons. There are some conditions associated with an enlarged heart. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, (your heart has to pump harder to deliver blood to your body which enlarges or thickening the heart muscle.) HEART VALVE DISEASE.(There are four valves with in your heart that keep blood flowing in the right direction. These valves may become damaged by such conditions: RHEUMATIC FEVER, CONGENITAL HEART DEFECT, INFECTIONS ENDOCARDITIS. an infection inside the heart. CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISORDERS, CERTAIN MEDICATIONS, AND WHAT DzooBaby referred to (COPD). CARDIOMYOPATHY IS A DESEASE OF THE HEART MUSCLE THAT MAY PRESENT ON CHEST X-RAY AS "CARDIOMEGALY" that is the thickening and stiffening of the heart muscle it' self.

Another condition is (PULMONARY HYPERTENSION) High blood pressure in the artery connecting your heart and lungs, your heart has to work harder to move blood between your heart and lungs, As a result, the right side of your heart will enlarge. There are a few other disorders I cannot remember what they are but they are rare. OH Thyroid disorders can contribute to an enlarged heart either an underactive or overactive thyroid. There are some other obscure blood disorders and proteins that can enlarge your heart, I can't remember. Their is another chronic condition of (ARRHYTHMIA) Abnormal heartbeat that can make your heart have to work harder, and may enlarge it. It is treatable! By correcting the underlying cause with medication "rarely" surgery is indicated. Most treatment's are controlling risk factors. No tobacco use, controlling high blood pressure, getting high cholesterol down and diabetes, helps your enlarged hart to remain stable, and can prevent the disease from worsening. There are millions of people walking around with enlarged heart's (Of course stay off that cocaine)Ha! I hope I did not muddy the water with all of this, I just tried to give you an over view of what is happening, and not to worry! It is mostly treated with medication. Take care Dave
I appreciate all your comments! Don't know if I can leave the cocaine alone, but I found out this runs in my family. My grandmother lived 30 years with it. I have to go for more test to see what is causing it, but I would say high blood pressure. Pain always makes your blood pressure high and I lived a long time with pain. My doctor changed my blood pressure medicine and had oxygen sent to my house. I've had pneumonia and bronchitis already this year which could be a cause. I will have to wait for test, now that everyone scared me to death! LOL. Going to take it seriously for sure!
