Is there a health risk if you take theophylline for many years 4yrs now?

I have seen people being on it longer than 4 years. However, there are newer and better medicines available now for asthma. It might be a good idea to try something else, newer, with less side effects, etc. If the new one doesn't work as well then you could go back on theophylline again.
