Tamiflu is used in children over 1 year of age. As far as FDA approval goes, it it fine but as with all medicines there are adverse effects which may occur. (The risk is same for children and adults).
Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of oseltamivir in children younger than 1 year of age. Safety and efficacy have not been established .
The recommended doses for Tamiflu in adults and children over 1 year old is:
For oral dosage forms (capsules and suspension):
* For treatment of the flu:
o Adults and teenagers—75 milligrams (mg) two times a day for five days.
o Children 1 year of age or older—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. It is usually between 30 and 75 mg two times a day for five days.
o Children up to 1 year of age—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor .
* For prevention of the flu:
o Adults and teenagers—75 milligrams (mg) once a day for at least ten days.
o Children 1 year of age or older—Dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. It is usually between 30 and 75 mg once a day for ten days.
o Children up to 1 year of age—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor .
