I am wondering... is Soma the proper medication for TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)? My doctor refuses to give me anything other than this medication. I am very sensitive to medications, and I find that Soma really has turned me into a zombie. Are there any alternatives my doctor could be giving me? Hopefully something that doesn't make me brain-dead?

I have had very bad TMJ... I was Rx low dose valium... 2mg. It did make me fussy at first but that cleared quickly. Now I will take in every now and then.. If the pain begins I will take 1mg two nights in a row and that will break the cycle. it very addictive so I am careful with it.
Soma is a muscle relaxer... should not be use more then a few weeks. I don't think its the right drug for chronic TMJ... I am not a doc. so I really have no right even saying this. I just dont agree with the treatment

I have also had TMJ as far back as I can remember. Thankfully it's better today. It's just not as bothersome now as it has been at times in the past. TMJ can be very painful and it can bring about all kinds of problems for us like headaches, ear aches, sleep problems, eating problems, etc. My mouth still makes that clicking sound sometimes when I chew. It totally annoys the members of my family who have heard it for so many years. :p Some foods make it a lot more noisier than others and that even hurts sometimes.
I know that mouth guards are commonly used for treatment to help keep the back teeth from clenching and grinding so badly. They often refer to the mouth guard as a splint. These splints or guards can cause dental problems with our bite however so even they are not really good for a lifetime of use.

Hi there..I know how awful TMJ can be, and I am sorry you are dealing with it. Soma is an EXCELLENT muscle relaxer, but if it is making you feel like a zombie, then talk to your Doctor about a medication called "Robaxin".
It is very effective and a little less "zombie" like.:) Or you can ask about a medication called :Flexeril". This medication is also a little less strong.
I hope this helps, and that you feel better soon.

I would possibly go along with robaxin but flexeril is not going to do the trick for TMJ. It's just not strong enough. Flexeril is best for minor to moderate muscle strain. Methocarbamol (robaxin) is still not as effective as soma. I believe this person would be better off continuing with soma but reducing their dose. TMJ causes a minimum of moderate to more likely severe muscle pain in face and neck.
One good thing about Methcarbamol in this case is that it does have a sedative along with the muscle relaxing capabilities so that could possibly work and not have to take a benzo as was earlier discussed.

I have TMJ, Mobic (prescription medication) Is an easy one day dose anti infllam. and works wonders. I am an addict and have been in recovery for 4 years so I watch very close when taking any type of pain meds. I broke my ankle and my Doc was looking for an anti-inflam. I could use other than Motrin. It didn't help my ankle pain, but it did completely rid me from the pain of my TMJ. Still take it everyday and havn't been haunted by the pain TMJ causes since! I would love to kiss the chemist who created this drug!
