Hello Trary. I have depression (major/refractory). Sound like a dr. don't I? :-0)If you click on my avatar, you can read a bit about myself. Enough of me. I was on seroquel for I believe three or four years. I dropped it because even with insurance it was costing me (out of pocket). My dose was 300mg, and I took it entirely at bedtime. It always gave me the munchies, and a very dry mouth. Having said that, did it help me? Yes, in as much as not falling into an even worse state of depression. I enjoyed it as far as medications went. If, for example, I could take it again at a reasonable cost to me, in the blink of an eye, I'd certainly would. The side effects are no worse, than most other psychiatric drugs that are avaliable to us today ( my own opinion, not meant to be offensive). If you are going to be on seroquel, feel comfort in that it has shown to be successful in the treatment of depression. Many more drs. are prescribing it today, just for that reason.

Hi i take seroquel for bipolar, which i know isn't what you are asking, but i just wanted to relieve some of your worries about it. I have been taking it for 6 or 7 months now and it has helped me a lot! The only side effects i had were drowsiness in the day and a bit lethargic. But it turned out i was sensitive to seroquel, which some people can be, so my dose was reduced by just 50mg and i suddenly felt wide awake! I also have depression, and take other meds for that, but i can't help think that the seroquel has not just stabilised my bipolar moods but also improved my depression. It is definitely a drug worth trying as pledge has also said.
Hi Dellia , I am Bi-Polar too , so your comments are very relevant and helpful.I can't emphasize enough how much you and Pledge's replies to my very vague question have helped me and reminded me that I am not alone not a freak and some very lovely kind thoughtful people suffer from this dreadful malaise. Thank you and best wishes ever, Trary

Thank you Pledge I truly appreciate you taking the time out to reply to my question.Psychiatric drugs are scary so it is very helpful to humanize the subject with some first person experiences from other sufferers in the same boat more or less. I was diagnosed Bi-Polar a few years ago but have battled depression since I was a child and have always carried guilt and shame as if it is my fault and I am weak, which stopped me seeking help.Sharing with open generous people like yourself is therapeutic in it's self and your empathy has lifted my spirit , and given me comfort best wishes to you too, Trary
Hi Trary! How are you today? I hope better.
I did some research on your question. According to this information, I've discovered that Seroquel is used for extreme depression. It is used, in conjunction with other medications, to treat depression. Seroquel is a med that is meant to treat all three of the major symptoms of bipolar disorder: Depression, Mania and Mixed Episodes. Please remember that I'm not a Doctor!
Have you heard of Seroquel XR? It sounds like it would be much more effective for Severe depression. I don't know. It wasn't out yet when I was taking regular Seroquel.

I've had severe depression most of my life(I'm 61) so I can relate to your need to seek information about the med your taking. I've taken so many different meds over the years, that it's difficult to remember which ones were effective and why I changed from one to the other, but I do remember Seroquel. I took it for a long time along with Klonopin for depression. That was 7 years ago. Then the depression became much worse. My Psychiatrist then switched from Seroquel to Cymbalta. Wow! What a difference it made. I had more energy and I felt so much better mentally as well as physically. I took it for 2 years.
Unfortunately, I had the first and only "manic episode" I've ever had. It had absolutely nothing to do with Seroquel or any med. It was the Holiday Season, and that's when a good part of bipolars have manic episodes I lived homeless for 6 mos. I was hospitalized for almost 2 months. After I got out of the hospital, my Dr. changed my meds from Klonopin and Cymbalta, to Lamictal and Klonopin, and Ambien for sleep. I have depression a lot, even though I'm taking medication. My Doc told me it was "Situational.". Meaning it had to do with the repercussions that life deals out to us. Such as my family hates me. There's just some things that a pill can't change. I had to go through it with my psychiatrists support. I called him, and he called me back, which is unusual for a psychiatrist to spend time with you on the phone, helping you through depression. I am blessed.
Trary, I'm glad you're here with us. We need all the support we can get and you sound like a person who's had experience with depression, which is a big problem in this world. Plz stay in touch. It would be good to know what your Doctor has to say about this.
A dozen roses,
Anna
Hello Pickles , thank you so much for your help. You certainly have endured some hard knocks and have not only survived but have the heart and generosity to care about others in similar plight.
People often confuse the person with the illness and are scared that something may be asked of them so they resort to hatred , it is so much easier than thinking. Sad for them too.
I appreciate your thoughtful reply and will keep in touch it is therapeutic to share and affirm the knowledge that we are not alone and we can help each other. Best wishes ever Trary
