Is it safe to take a cough syrup within an hour of taking cough gels?

Please be very very careful with the cough syurp. The Doctor gave me Robitussin with Codine and i was so sick i could'nt get out of bed. so instead of using a spoon ,i would wake up every couple of hours and take a big swallow. family had been calling me and my son finally came over. he told me he was calling a amubulance and he said i crossed my arm's and said i was'nt going nowhere. that was the last thing i remember. i woke up 2 days later in I.C.U.
so i was in the hospital for a week. so now i keep a spoon by my side and write down the last time i took it. as for the cough keep doing what they say or go back to the Docter and get something else.
