My primary physician put me on Synthroid a number of years due to hypothyroidism. Would it be all-right for me to take a thyroid support supplement contating iodine, selenium, B vitamins, Zinc and several other minerals?
Is it all-right for me to take a thyroid support supplement while taking the synthroid?

Hi SandyBe--- I was considering doing the same thing since I've been on Synthroid for many years and still have many signs of hypothyroid. I've since decided to go to a specialist in bio-identical hormones because there are some other signs I'm showing, such as Adrenal Fatigue. He stressed the importance of being very careful not to take too many supplements without keeping a close eye on the regular bloodwork panel for thyroid function. You want to be careful not to get too much Iodine, but the others that you mention seem okay to be taking. I would definitely check with your Dr. on the next visit, however, because there are many factors that can cause thyroid condition to continue or become worse despite bloodwork to the contrary. Its just one of those areas in which its difficult to tease apart all the variables of which hormone, medication, food, etc. is affecting which! Drs.

Dear Sandy. I would make sure to check with your physician. You will probably need to have your TSH checked (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and T3 T4 test done. If that is ok and it is ok with your doc I think it will be fine. You certainly don't want to go the other way and get hyperthyroid.
Pup - Yes, let's compare. I'm excited about it after going to a seminar at Body Logic MD. It seems quite expensive, but anything is worth getting to the bottom of this low thyroid, menopausal, adrenal fatigue rat race! I exercise hard 5-6 times/week and still can't lose anymore weight! Feel a bit better, but want some answers. I, too just got a Sommers book. There are some cads out there, however. Have to be careful. Is your Dr. taking insurance for his visit or testing? Good luck! Can't wait to get my first appointment & test results. Cette
Hi Cette... I just started taking the basic bio-identicals yesterday and already feel a little better so I am hopeful when my test results get back and I can go on what my body is lacking. No and yes about the insurance. My doc did not take insurance there in the office. Everything was cash (CC) pay but they did give me insurance forms to send to my insurance company so we shall see. It will be interesting. Can't wait to hear how you do. Keep me updated!! Pup

Yes, I'm still experiencing hair loss plus fatigue has become a major issue. We switched our salt to sea salt which has no iodine. When I realized this could further weaken my thyroid, I wanted to provide it with the nutrients it needs so I began looking for alternatives. I did some research on iodine-rich foods and found a long list. I'm thinking it may be best to supplent through my diet rather than through a pill. Thanks for your help.
Hi Sandy,
I believe sea salt has iodine in it. I will have to go on a low iodine diet soon before Rai treatment and I have to stop anything from the sea because of iodine in it.
The label on the sea salt says, "No iodine" but with it coming from the sea, it does seem likely.
