My doctor says that it it is addicticitive, and he does not not like to like to prescipe it to to me for that that reason.

Demerol is an Opioid. All Opioids are addictive. Pretty simple. Most doctors don't like prescribing Opioids due to the FDA as well as the potential for addiction. It is not however addictive if you follow your doctors instructions, and don't take more than is recommended. If your still in pain, then you simply make an appointment with your doc to have the dosage increased.
Hope that this is of some help!

Searching for surgical pain med alternative to demerol.?
3 years ago was given an od of demerol while hospitalized. I also had a morphine drip but my veins were too thin for the iv which kept falling out, ...

Even if you follow your docs orders if you are taking high doses of opiates your body is gonna become dependant. on the opiates.
This is true, but I'd like to point out that dependence isn't addiction. Dependence is when you're body becomes adjusted to a med, and in order to stop the med, it has to be slowly tapered. Addicted is when you need more and more of a drug to achieve the wanted effect of euphoria - lying and doctor shopping if need be to get the desired med. Two very different things. I mean really, anything that you take that affects the brain more often than not causes dependence, or what doctors like to call "discontinuation syndrome". SSRI's, SNRI's, Opioids, Benzo's, Antipsychotics all cause dependence. Not really a big deal. Addiction is a problem though...
JK,
Great info, however I agree with both you and oxyaaron!
luv ya,

Hey Lemon girl, how are you doing! I'd have to agree! Both are right, and hope my comment wasn't an I'm right and you're wrong sort of answer as that was not my intention. I was just trying to add on additional info regarding the definition of the two words, two words that are very important to know the difference when it comes to dealing with doctors. If they say that you will become dependent, that's totally different than you'll become addicted (just about the same thing as saying you'll become a junkie), and actually, reading my original answer, I misspoke as I said "addicted" and really meant "dependent". The doctor may or may not have made the same mistake as well.

If the doctor intentionally said that you'll become "addicted" as in, you'll become a junkie, then I'd give it some thought if you should switch doctors, as medication prescribed for pain rarely turns into addiction, but will absolutely cause dependence. The non-treatment of pain is most often the cause of misuse and addiction, being forced to take more due to the pain not being treated properly. Now, the rate of "misuse" is very high, but "misuse" does not necessarily mean taking a med to get high, but also includes giving a pill to a friend who is in severe pain or anything that is not within the doctors instructions. I think that most of us have at some point "misused" our medication at some point, especially when you include otc meds. How often exactly can you take asprin or tylenol... or your inhalor, if you happen to have asthma. How much asthma medicine are you suppose to take exactly if you have an asthma attack. These are all questions that I don't know, and I have asthma. In this case, I'm a stat, one of many who misuse their meds. If my wife is in severe pain, yes, I'd give her a Norco happily if I had any leftovers (but she's actually very very reluctant to take meds of any sort). So, I hope that this clarifies things a bit.
:)
JK,
Your info is always concise, and right on the money my friend, hope I did not imply otherwise!!! You are very wise.

No offense taken at all, just wanted to make sure that I didn't come off the wrong way!
Weeeell -
Did you ask for Demerol? Isn't that for serious, like, post-major-surgery type of drug (at least that is when I have been prescribed it). If you asked the Dr. for it, I ask you why are you? Like be honest. Are you looking forward to floating on a cloud, innurred to everything that needs serious attention - kind of a buffer between your reality and you?
I have been in hospital's where the majority of patient's were going thru withdrawl and rehab... and for a lot of people, getting off anthing addicting is horrid. And of course there is my own putting down of substances, most recently smoking - pain in my a@s.
The main question - a private question - why are you really asking for Demerol? Oh crap - I was confusing Demerol with Dialaudid - but everything I said goes for that too (I think- I have never been a pill person - just coke, booze, pot, smokes, and caffeine).
Odd that you'd be making such a judgement on a person asking a simple question about a pain med that has legit uses, when you're just a "coke, booze, and pot" kinda of guy. The only use for black market coke is non-medical, and for partying, same with booze, and more likely than not, the pot as well. Please understand that this site is full of people who have severe chronic pain, and the question should not need to be justified to prevent people from assuming that they're a junkie, looking to float around a cloud. I personally have chronic pain, and find methadone to be the only medication that works on my nerve related pain, where as the other Opioids don't work as well - such as the Oxycotin, another fun cloud med. Due to the fact that I take methadone does not make me a recovering junkie, but simply a guy who needs to be able to live my life. I have fibromyalgia, and due to my anxiety I have to take Klonopin among other sedating drugs.

Due to all of the sedating drugs, I have to take a stimulant to prevent me from falling asleep mid-day, therefore, the need for Ritalin. No clouds, just pain, anxiety, and mental troubles, nothing about being sick is fun. Please in the future, refrain from unhelpful comments of this sort, displaying the same sort of prejudice against that got me fired.
Thanks,
Jeff K
i agree Jk13, totally right.
