Details:
I am currently nursing my baby and have been given the newly approved CYMBALTA for depression. While it says on the warnings (do not take while pregnant or nursing,) my doctor has told me that I can take it and nurse, just that I should keep a close eye on my infant for sudden changes or side effects. This makes me nervous. Please help. What are the reasons that the warnings say not to take while nursing. I was recently taking prozac while I was not only nursing but pregnant and doctors say that was safe but it just didnt help me.

Apparently all these drugs get into the breast milk. They always say to check with your doctor, but the doctor only knows what is in the package insert put out by the drug company unless the drug has been out for a long time and doctors have acquired years of experience. Cymbalta is new. Apparently on testing by the drug company they have found no evidence of danger to a child who is breast feeding. They do extensive testing. You can read the package insert yourself. However, after years of experience with using any drug, sometimes harmful effects do come to the surface. When advising a patient on use of a drug, the doctor must weigh the severity of the symptoms (depression) against the possibility of some harmful effect occurring ten years down the line. No-one knows what might show up at that time. Taking this into consideration, you are the one who has to decide whether you want to take the drug or not. Also if you decide to take Cymbalta, your breastfeeding child can have any of the side effects mentioned in the insert. Also, Cymbalta can interact with other medicines should your child need anything. It pays to learn all you can about side effects and interactions as physicians cannot keep up with all these possible occurrences themselves.
