im up to an incredible amount of Ativan. I can hold out til about 5pm then take the 3 I am given per day, all at once! Then I keep going til I feel no anxiety. I realize I'm in a bad place here but I'm also weening off Norcos at 2mg sub a day. Any ideas welcome.
First is Ativan A's dangerous A's Xanax to withdraw from?
Second should I wait to get rid of suboxone before tackling this monster?
Is Ativan as dangerous to withdraw from as Xanax?

I have a neighbor and a cousin the neighbor had been on a prescription of Ativan which was the strongest that it comes in, he was down and described the difference, he said the Ativan was tough due to the fact that until you got it all out of your system that you do not sleep.

Cathleen, I don't want to scare or offend you but I really think you should let the doctor handle the weaning off of the ativan since you are on pain meds. Coming off the ativan too soon could cause seizures, and I would hate to see that happen. Both ativan and xanax are benzos so the risks are the same and they are both dangerous to come off of IF IMPROPERLY DONE. My thoughts and Prayers are with you. If you are not sure your doctor is handling the weaning correctly, a psychiatrist who treats addiction would be a good bet for this. Many don't understand that psychologists and psychiatrists are not the same thing and that it is the psychiatrist who holds the necessary degree to dispense medications. A psychiatrist who specializes in addiction is trained to properly taper you off. Weaning off the sub and norco may also be contributing to the anxiety. The fear of coming off medications is also very frightening for most people and can easily be causing the anxiety.

Hey Cat,
Please try to take the Ativan as it is prescribed and not wait until the end of the day when the anxiety is overwhelming you. If you take as prescribed throughout the day, I promise, you will not be a mess at the end of the day.
The Ativan is just as messy as the Xanax as far as weaning and will have to be done gradually over much time. I would recommend trying to take the prescribed amount until you are off the Suboxone in a few more weeks. Then we can tackle the Ativan and Xanax. Put this on the list to discuss with the doctor, too.
I'm here for ya girl, and praying everyday for your health and well being,
Laurie

Ativan and Xanax are in the same family so yes they carry the same risks of withdrawl. They are both benzos and yes you can have seizures withdrawing from either of them. I say this because my mother was on both for extended lengths of tme at one time or another and I know that she went through a very slow taper to get off of both of them comfortably and safely.Xanax is the stronger medication, however if your putting back three at a time than more your aquiring the same type of dependency. The real question is are you ready to be clean or are you not. It is frightening to think about our lives at times without ANY vices. The comfort of the ativan is most likely making your fear about leaving subs behind less scary. Yet when you are ready to get clean without reservation you'll be trying to leave ALL of your addictions behind.

Cathleen, please tell me you aren't mixing Benzo's-Ativan with Suboxone!!! That is very dangerous. As I told you before, if you need to take pain meds, take them . If you are trying to detox from narcotics by taking Ativan, it will only help you temporarily. Ativan makes you feel less stressful and helps you get through the withdrawals of narcotics, but then you will go through withdrawals from the Ativan. My suggestion is the same as before. Stick with one medication. If you are in a place where you feel you need to take pain meds, then take them. Right now you probably have a double addiction to pain meds and also to Benzo's , which is the class of drug that Ativan is in. I recommend that you only take one or the other. Then later, when you feel you can get off of the pain meds, go back to taking the Suoxone to get off everything. Going back and forth like that was just my way of trying to fool my body into thinking that I wasn't addicted to either.

I think I remember you saying that you have been on ativan for 10 years. Maybe I'm wrong but I've been on clonzepam for about 15 years and trying to get off this suboxone without a benzo is too scary for me. I read that if your body is used to taking the benzo that it is not as dangerous to mix with suboxone unless it is given to someone who has never taken benzos and put on suboxone. I'm going to the doctor today. I've been taking xanax now and wonder if I should try the extended release form so I don't have to take so many. You're doing a great job and I know you can beat this! TC! Larsy :)

Larsy1966, I think it's really scary that when I went to a Suboxone clinic to get off of narcotics and the Benzo's, that I read about people using Benzo's to get off of the Suboxone. I just really can't take much more of this anxiety about drugs. I spent too many years taking pain meds, feeling guilty for taking them even though there were times that I really couldn't get through the pain without them. Then I finally think I've found the answer , a way to finally get off of the narcs, and I keep reading about how difficult it is to get off of the Suboxone. I just can't win. Will this night mare ever end? I just want my life back. I guess there just isn't any free ride out there. Everything has a price. I've been taking the Suboxone for a year now, and I don't intend on ever finding out how hard it is to get off of it. It's all I have to help with migraine pain. I can't go back to pain meds, and I don't enjoy pain.

I'm just stuck here in this rut again. Doctors just seem to give one pill after another to get off another pill. Why can't they come up with something to get us off of everything? Wishful thinking I guess. I'm just really frustrated with all of this. I know there isn't any miracle drug out there, but I sure thought I'd found something close to it. After reading one nightmare story after another about Suboxone, I just don't know what to think anymore. NIK
Hey Nik, I did successfully wean off Suboxone once (I'm on it again). I know there are a lot of horror stories about it but mine is not one. Please pm me for any reason. Cathleen
