They're made of the same ingredient but they have different ways of distribution the drug. Regular Ambien is dissolved all at once and stops working after a few hours. It will work better for people that have a hard time getting to sleep and don't have a problem staying asleep. Ambien CR is a controlled release drug so it's for people who have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep. That's the difference between the two. Hope this helps!
