I had my regular doctor's appointment on Monday. I've been having a lot of trouble sleeping... not falling asleep, but staying asleep. I will wake several times in the night, then not be able to fall back to sleep. I take Topamax and asked my doctor if that could be the root of my sleep problem. He said "No, it's your "Chick-brain" worrying about stuff". (He wasn't being rude, we have a friendly relationship and I see him pretty often these days) He suggested trying Ambien. I guess my concern is that the Topamax already slows me down that the Ambien will make me a zombie in the morning (usually my best time of the day, even when I don't get much sleep at night).
Has anyone tried Ambien? What's been your experience? What are the plusses and minuses?
I really need to get some sleep. I'm so tired all day.
Insomnia... is Ambien the answer?

Hi Smartchick73. Scrolling through older questions and found yours and most certainly you might by this time tried ambien. I'll answer your question for others who might be reading it in the futur.I was on ambien 20mg for just under a year. I stopped taking it because my body built up an immunity to it. It seems over the years my body does that. Nothing but good things to say about it. Its not a benzodiazepine, and so there less problems in that regard. It never once left me feeling lathargic. I'd wake up feeling fairly refreshed, although I am an insomniac and to get 3 or 4 hours of back to back sleep, is a plus indeed. Having said that, I hope that it works for you as well as it has for me.

I take ambien often and it does not make me feel tired at all the next day. It doe work. When I first started taking it I feel asleep and did not even remember when I awoke the next day when i did fall off to sleep. Now it seems like I am taking it more since I have started the suboxone and as long as I get 7 hours I am fine. There does not seem to be any side effects, so I can not really say there are minuses at this time. I do wake up 2 or 3 times at night. No matter how tired I am. When I was on opiates I use to sleep through the night no problems. Those special nights when I think I will sleep all night one of my dogs wakes me up, wanting to go out to pee. Yes they seem to find their way to my bed every night. But, since I am on the ambien I fall right back to sleep.

Hi Smartchick... the only minus I can tell u re ambien is the amnesia effect that it causes. I took it for a while the first time I tried to get off of vicodin which caused a lot of insomnia. Now that I am on suboxone I don't have trouble sleeping and if I so I take a Xanax. Coby is correct that if u get at least 7-8 hrs of sleep there should not b any hangover effect. I didn't like, for example, getting up n the middle of the night to get a drink of water or a munchy, I would get up n the morning and see the glass or the wrapper from the munchy and would not even recall why. My business partner has even bought things on eBay without remembering that she did that!!! She would see the printed out computer copy and look at the time and was amazed that she bid on something or bought something and had no recollection of it!!!

I do not know what is wrong with this site today but it says my answer is from: Answer posted 16 Dec 2009 by Coby416 above. How can that be. I sent a couple of PG to people and have not received replies wonder if there is a problem.
Wishing you the best
