I read that it lasts 24 hours with almost no side effects (per "Delivered from Distraction" book by Hallowell/Ratey) and no abuse potential (therefore not a controlled substance), but it is rarely prescribed. Does anybody have info or experience with this? I am currently on Ritalin LA, 30 mg. and it works pretty well, but I love the idea of a 24-hour effect with no hassle getting refills! Thanks.

This study was finished in 2007.
".....data suggest that amantadine has acceptable acute tolerability at single doses up to 150 mg/day and is possibly efficacious in decreasing ADHD symptoms, although its activity appears to be more modest than that of stimulant medications."

As with many medical conditions the best treatment is often found by trial and error.
Technically amantadine is used to treat parkinson's disease. However due to the chemical processes that take place it can also be helpful in treating adhd. However there are other types of non-stimulant medications that are primarily for adhd and are proven more effective. One such med is straterra which I have personally taken and found to be quite effective. it is not considered a scheduled drug and works primarily on the brain chemical norepinephrine . it is also a 24 hour drug. When i took it I found that I did not have as many problems with sleep as i have on adderall.
