When I was taking amitryptiline (elavil) and it worked very well for me. My md switched me to nortryptiline (pamelor). It does not work as well for me and he refuses to switch me back. I cannot get a straight answer from him as to why. What is the major difference between the two and can anyone guesstimate why he won't switch?
In treating insomnia, which works better amitryptiline or nortryptiline?

Both drugs are used to treat depression and some other conditions as well. Nortryptiline may have 2 medicines in it, I am not sure. You can look them both up here just under the drugs.com logo in the drugs A to Z section or on wikipedia.org. Effexor has 2 meds in it and I personally couldn't take that one. Elavil worked great for me to sleep. It is a tricyclic antidepressant not an ssri. It is one of the old ones. You can also talk to your pharmacist about them. Maybe your doctor should explain why he/she won't put you back on elavil.

Thank you for your input. I very much appreciate it. I will try to talk to him again. My next visit is in 2 weeks. Wish me luck! lol
