The Subutex will tie up the opiate receptor sites in the brain thereby preventing the pain killers from working. You may want to discontinue the Subutex temporarily. Once you are through the surgery and pain is manageable again, you will have to wait the required amount of time before restarting the Subutex so to prevent precipitated withdrawals. Your Subutex doctor should be able to enlighten the others.

Is there a difference between Subutex and Suboxone? Thanks, Harmony
Yes there is a difference, Subutex contains buprenorphine while Suboxone contains buprenorphine with naloxone. The naloxone is added to prevent drug addicts from injecting the medication.
I never abused pain meds, but when I chose to quit Suboxone was what they gave me. Now I am having my knee replaced tomorrow, could I take subutex instead of suboxone? The person above said that subutex binds to the brain too, and that you can't take normal narcotics, if so, why? Thx, Harmony
Oops, that was you, Larrieshae! Would you please explain the difference to me? Thanks, H
The buprenorphine in the Suboxone and Subutex has a greater affinity for the brain receptors in the brain than the other opiates. Therefore is blocks the opiates from working as they can not attach to the receptors. It is a bit more complicated than this but that is the basic explanation.
BTW, yes you could take Subutex rather than the Suboxone if you wish and the doctor would prescribe.
