I was recently prescribed on a Thursday 1000mg of Depakote daily. On Monday I was violently ill and went to the ER and they diagnosed me with acute pancreatitis. The ER i went to discharged me but did not tell me to stop taking the medicine. My psychiatrist told me the very next morning to continue on the Depakote. That afternoon I became violently ill again and was rushed to a different ER and admitted for four days with chemically induced acute pancreatitis. My levels of lipase and analase(sp?) quadrupled. I have been recently released, however I am still having severe pain in the area of my pancreas and nausea.(thank god for Zofran) Any ideas or thoughts? - I'm looking for help-
thanks

Hello vtchachi78. I did some researching and found nothing to suggest that Depakote could be the cause of the pancreatitis. But it certainly looks as if it is the cause. Just curious, for I'm certain that you no longer taking it, if you aren't, what you replaced the depakote with. Hope that you are well and best of wishes, pledge

Hi vtchachi78, hope that you are feeling a bit better, and not in too much pain. What a bummer. Well as for your question. I have been taking depakote daily for a long time - 8 years - and I never had any such complication in all that time. Actually, no complications at all really... never any evidence that it had a negative effect on my liver, which it could have a potential to do. The worst I could say that happened to me was that if my dosage gets increased, I may be subjected to hand tremors, but it

Here is some information that you might find useful, I hope it sheds some light on you acute pancreatitis... I hope this finds you healthy and happy! CASES OF LIFE-THREATENING PANCREATITIS HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS RECEIVING VALPROATE. SOME OF THE CASES HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS HEMORRHAGIC WITH A RAPID PROGRESSION FROM INITIAL SYMPTOMS TO DEATH. CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED SHORTLY AFTER INITIAL USE AS WELL AS AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF USE. PATIENTS AND GUARDIANS SHOULD BE WARNED THAT ABDOMINAL PAIN, NAUSEA, VOMITING, AND/OR ANOREXIA CAN BE SYMPTOMS OF PANCREATITIS THAT REQUIRE PROMPT MEDICAL EVALUATION. IF PANCREATITIS IS DIAGNOSED, VALPROATE SHOULD ORDINARILY BE DISCONTINUED. ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT FOR THE UNDERLYING MEDICAL CONDITION SHOULD BE INITIATED AS CLINICALLY INDICATED. Good luck and always advocate for yourself when it comes to your health. (Valproic acid is the generic name for Depakote)

Yes, Depekote can cause Pancreatitis. My daughter got it from taking it and it nearly killed her. She was 9 years old and had been taking Depekote for about a few weeks and had built up to a high dose of it. She had stomach pain, I thought at the time she was coming down with the flu but the next morning when I got her up she was totally listless and belched upon siting her upright. We took her to the Emergency Room and she was admitted in critical condition. She spent a week in intensive care and then we moved her to Texas Children's hospital she stayed there another 3 weeks. She can never take Depekote again!
