... everyone who works hard had..but my TSH was high. Reluctantly i started syhthroid and started experiencing hot flashes and muscle and join stiffness and less libido, these are all things i do NOT want to live with forever, so I started taking the meds every other day to see what would happen, felt fine but when i had the recent re-check TSH was still high so i admitted to my doc what i was "trying:" but agreed to go back on the recommended dosage and now I feel all the adverse side effects, do NOT want to be on this medication, my joints hurt and I feel tired... is it possible that these side effects subside after awhile? Doc says to wait 8wks until a another blood test, she is a PA , not an endocrinologist..help!

Tell your PA that you want to try another type of hormone suppliment-like Armour Thyroid Extract-and take it exactly as directed. Also, a high TSH means that you don't have enough thyroid in your system. When the thyroid is off-a gland in the brain tries to make thyroid-but it really messes things up. You should've gone in and complained loudly and often about the side-effects of synthroid. Also there are a ton of different types of synthetic thyroid suppliments. You can die from a low thyroid-have heart damage, be aggressive, gain weight-become irrational and depressed, really emotional. Also doctors become focused on a certain brand or type of thyroid suppliment-so it's important to let your PA know that you know, and you aren't happy right now, which is why you quit following directions. I've been quite happy and have had good care from PAs and very young residents. On this site, many people keep saying specialists-but there are bad specialists.

Hey thx for all the feedback! I am not sure yet, think I am "leveling out", took my regular yoga class and starting to feel more balanced, I am a regular walker and hiker and do yoga so I am planning on getting on a better routine after the Holidays, ,<which puts many people in a tailspin with their diet and exercise. I will tell my PA "loudly" if these side effects continue and I have heard of Armour ( the "natural" one?)... will be in touch.. Do you find certain foods make you feel better, or worse? or supplements, I take vitamins and calcium. I hear of taking Iodine but I think it can also be dangerous when mixing with the meds? I am hopeful the side effects will go away, like yours did. So now they make a bovine extract hormone as opposed to the swine?~~~ thanks again, take care!
Bovine was the first. Armour slaughter house in Phoenix needed a routine clean up- check ground water, etc at any pharmetical plant. They make a surplus to last until the clean up is finished and production restarts. PETA doesn't want any animal to be used for medical purposes, so EPA and FDA decided to humor PETA and not use butchered cow thyroid for medicine. The thyroid was trashed, while the rest of the cow went to McDonalds. Beef and all drugs from mexico are banned-so no "Mexican" thyroid extract. That leaves canada. Canada has "Mad Cow" disease-so for several years I had to use pork thyroid from Canada. Since synthroid doesn't work for everybody, people of the jewish and Muslim faith were given an unclean medicine-they can't eat pork. Then it seems that Alpha males seem to need natural thyroid-cops, rangers, pilots, and in spite of PETA, Armour was allowed to open their production line again.

IODINE--- Okay- you want to eat normal. You can take vitamins-A-Z, but no iodine. If you normally eat fish-like you live on the Gulf Coast-maine-Hawaii-just eat normal. I live in the Rockies, so I seldom eat fish, but have always used iodized salt-. If I start craving seafood all of the time, I haul my rear end in and ask for a thyroid scan. If my thyroid is normal, I really don't want seafood. Craving seafood is a sign of the thyroid being off, as is the craving for salt-like a ton of potato chips. Craving potato chips can be a sign of a vitamin B deficiency too. So eat normal-what's normal for you and your area-here beef is normal-fish isn't. Iodine will screw up your tests so the doctor can't help you very well. It will screw up your body and brain. We get a certain amount of iodine in almost everything we eat anyway, even some cough syrups and other cold meds. So just be normal. At least what's normal for you.
I'm glad that you seem to be getting adjusted. Remember that you need to get the thyroid tested once a year. It's odd, but I live in a backward state-but the state requires a THS once a year. Some people here live in more advanced states and areas, but they go years without a TSH, and the doctor keeps writing out their scripts. My Walker Coonhound gets more thyroid screens than some Americans-go figure--BY THE WAY- U R seriously lucky to have that PA.
once again, thanks! I have a black lab which keeps me walking a lot!~~ I live in California (on the coast) and was craving seafood the other night and recently chicken too, felt like I needed protein.~~ and I do really like my PA too! I feel grateful to her, she is always very thorough with all my needs.
I'm glad that you have a good dog-it means a lot. I get frustrated when medicine interferes with my life. This spring I was looking forward to some slot canyons-and happy with my coonhounds. my chlorestral was borderline. My advice is that thyroid problems don't go well with hypothyroid and female. The AMA, FDA, NIH, etc have had warnings out about this for over 10 years. I like my doctor, but I was bullied into taking chlorestal reducing medicine-statin is the main med in all of those meds. The FDA says to stop taking it if you pee blood or your legs hurt. The truth is that if your legs feel tired stop- The chemical action in your body that prevents chlorestal build up in your blood-also prevents essential protiens and nutrients going to your muscles and kidneys-hence peeing blood. I thought-okay its the summer heat-it's 3 months of smoke from a major forest fire-and I do get soot on my face-I'm old. I was lucky that i had seizures.

My legs are getting stronger, My urine has finally gone to its natural color. I started to jog and almost did a face plant in November. I had to teach my legs how to jog again. here I was-just recovering from pork thyroid-walking my hounds over a mile a day-I quit drooling- my blood pressure went down-and i was hit with my legs not working-dark urine-reading all of these things that can happen to a female with hypothyroidism-like ending up in a wheel chair- having gangrene because statin messes up leg and foot circulation. I told my doctor that I don't have diabetis or heart problems-i didn't fall of a canyon wall- I shouldn't be thinking of learning how to walk and jog again, being on dialysis or in a wheeel chair for leg surgery-don't bully me again-when I say No- I mean No. The only way it could've been riskier, is if I were a female hypothyroid diabetic Chinese. If you take statins now-think about it. One hypothyroid woman ended up with her hands and feet amputated from statins. Walking and eating nuts are the best things to control lipids-as one woman stated-I loved to walk and hike, but Zocor took that away from me. i was in a new medical plan-and I was scared that I'd loose my medical coverage. This doctor never implied that-but the former doctor did tell me that.
WOW! that sounds awful, one reason I was so reticent to all this thyroid stuff was not very many symptoms, I am fortunate enough to have a 138 cholesterol, at one time it was 110... so I just couldn't believe I had hypothyroidism. But now reflecting back, I get really cold hands and feet and somewhat lethargic. But my hair, nails and skin (so far) are healthy. I have felt like I have had some hair-thinning though recently. I will keep with my recommended dosage for now! Take care!
