Metanx is considered a food supplement by my insurance company, why does it require a prescription?

Prescriptions add to the cost of this drug. Are there other alternatives available?

Has anyone had any tendonitis (tennis elbow) type symptoms while taking Metanx?

I developed tendonitis about the same time I started taking the Metanx for neuropathy.
