I have tried all other natural remedies in the past, meditation etc. I am finding as time goes on, this medicine is slowly less effective at achieving sleep. I take 75mg per night.

Hi cccje,
You might want to ask your doc for Ambien, or even a benzodiazapine, such as Valium or Xanax to help with sleep. These medications are addictive though. If used properly addiction can be avoided, the benzo's are not supposed to be used for a long time period. Yet, some people have taken them for years with no problems.
Best wishes for a good nights sleep,

Hi: I have had insomnia for over 30 years now, and the various sleep meds, like Ambien, worked great at first (one - two weeks), but then wore off. If we upped my dose, then I would feel all drugged out the next day.
I discovered Soma (the generic form, which is fairly inexpensive) in 2006, when it was prescribed to me by a Sports Med doc because of my extreme chronic neck and shoulder pain. It not only helped reduce the pain, but, taken before bed, it had the wonderful 'side effect' of LETTING me sleep thru the night, and still wake up clear-headed in the morning! The literature says that you can not take it if you have an 'addictive personality', but otherwise I think it is safe--and I have never had to up my dosing! Be sure to check it first against any other meds you are taking to look for interactions. Good Luck! Mary
I have heard rumors they will be taking Soma off the market! This will be serious for a lot of you. I'm thankful I was taken off it a year ago. I use Tizanidine now. It is not as good as Soma but has less addictive properties. I never felt any problems with Soma at any time though. I could take it or leave it. It is a big problem with abuse where I live though so most Drs wont prescribe it.

Hey cccje,
Can't make any new suggestions on the medication for sleep other than what has been suggested, but I did want to warn you that Tofranil is an antidepressant that must be tapered off of (not stopped abruptly) when and if you decide to switch to something else. You may feel some depression when you stop it as well.
You may get better results from a different antidepressant such as Elavil. Only a thought, always best to discuss with the doc. (guess i did make a suggestion, oops)
Good luck and keep us posted,
Laurie

Right on sweetlemon! I have a brain that won't shut off either. I believe it's the "A" type personality. I take Xanax & have since 1994. Have had to increase it from my starting dose of .5 mg to now 17 years later 3mg at bedtime, but my doc insist it's not going to hurt me as long as it's helping me, & he still considers this a small dose. Takes about 20 too 30 minutes to kick in. Hope this helps,
Mary,

I took Klonopen since 1994 to help me sleep but just now got off of it. I really don't like taking any medication but am on Ultram for restless legs and it keeps me awake. That is why I was on klonopen. Started taking Ambien but caused me to be sleepy the next day. If you take any benzodiazapine for a long period of time and at a substantial amount, you need to be careful getting off of. They Klonopen is the worst one getting off of. I only took lower dose at night so it was not as hard for me.
Saceysach (hope I got that right) you need to be careful of ultram too! It has the potential for abuse, & can cause seizures if stopped suddenly. It has snri qualities just like a antidepressant, & is very addictive... Mary
