My friends dad has gout. His hand, sometimes a foot, swell beyond belief. He has tried almost every pain med, anti inflammatory there is. He also eats lots of cheeries, stays away from red meat, does what he is supposed to. I don't know anything about this condition. Any advice on medication he could request? How is Gout normally treated and what has worked best for you? He is in terrible pain. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I need some information about GOUT?

I didn't know why saying he didn't eat red meat and he ate lots of cheeries was important. I sounded odd to me. But obviously there is a reason. My friends dad works on the docks in Chicago. He needs full use of his hands. The swelling in his hand is so bad. My friend described it like this.. "if you blew up a latex glove, THAT'S how big it gets".

its a horrible condition, i had a medication for it during chemotherapy but cant remember it, was a standard one which works on the blood instead of pain relief. my grandfather had it and he was tough as a dimand but it really hurt him. He used to have the odd beer know and then, this always made it worse. Anything that can help with circulation i would have thought may help as the blood vessels and nerves are the ones i think that are the cause if i remember right, i would hope by now they would have some new drug on the market for it, you no what some doctors are like, some no all the new things that come out and others just guess on whats been used for years, id rather a doctor get a book out or look somnething up on the net than guess. my doctor gets the odd book out know and then and he can explain how every med im on works, were other doctors ive asked the same question say they haven't heard of it or arn't sure and are to proud to look it up.

Hello Chris,
I do not suffer from gout but I know a couple of people that do, and I have helped them.
Treatment for gout.-
There are two key concepts essential to treating gout. First, it is critical to stop the acute inflammation of joints affected by gouty arthritis. Second, it is important to address the long-term management of the disease in order to prevent future gouty arthritis attacks and shrink gouty tophi crystal deposits in the tissues.
The treatment of an acute attack of gouty arthritis involves measures and medications that reduce inflammation. Preventing future acute gout attacks is equally as important as treating the acute arthritis. Prevention of acute gout involves maintaining adequate fluid intake, weight reduction, dietary changes, reduction in alcohol consumption, and medications to lower the uric acid level in the blood (reduce hyperuricemia).
wow nice work !!
I could not top those answers if I tried, wonderful work folks~ You never cease to amaze me, I also have some peeps I know with episodes of this painful, and debilitating disease. I hope this helps the person who asked the question. I even found out some things I was not aware of. Never too late to learn new things, and this group is absolutely fabulous and caring. Hugs to all. ;)

Hi Chris, some info on Gout for your friend, hope it helps?
Gout is a disease that results from an overload of uric acid in the body. This overload of uric acid leads to the formation of tiny crystals of urate that deposit in tissues of the body, especially the joints. When crystals form in the joints, it causes recurring attacks of joint inflammation (arthritis). Gout is considered a chronic and progressive disease. Chronic gout can also lead to deposits of hard lumps of uric acid in the tissues, particularly in and around the joints and may cause joint destruction, decreased kidney function, and kidney stones.
Rajive!!! What can I say, I am speechless. I will pass this information on for my friend. Thank you so very much.
your friend,
chris

I completely understand how your friend feels. My dad also has Gout. The thing with the red meat and cherries is this: Red meat can trigger a very bad attack and cherries are supposed to (hasn't worked for my dad either) help when you are having an attack. Another thing I have heard is to drink peach juice and soak the afflicted area in freash (or frozen) peaches. I am not sure if this one works. The peach juice did not seem to help my dad. Tell your friend that I do not suggest wasting time looking up lists of what to eat or not eat because the lists vary from site to site (the only constant was red meat = bad). My dad's Gout mostly affects his feet. Let me tell you, it is awful. He can not walk and is in so much pain that it hurts for even a sheet to touch his feet. He says that it feels like there are sharp pieces of glass in his feet. Gout is actual uric acid crystal deposits with a lot of swelling.
Thank you very much for the tips, I will pass this along.
Thank you lillolady, you are a good friend to come and comment. You don't visit too often so it is very much appreciated!

I suffer from chronic Gout so I know a little of what cause my Gout attacks. I tried everything that was suggested above without much luck. My attacks are triggered by sugar, and everything sweet related. I started having the attacks 10 years ago just out of the clear blue. Tried a number of meds. but no lasting help until I started on Allopurrinol and stopped the sweets. I have an occasional cookie, or 2, but really limit my intake of sweet items.
How this helps.
Thank you Sandy! All these tips will certainly help.
Much appreciated,
Chris

Medicines used to treat acute gout and/or prevent further attacks are as follows:
•Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
â—¦Examples include indomethacin (Indocin), ibuprofen (Advil), and naproxen (Aleve). Newer drugs such as celecoxib (Celebrex) can also be used. Aspirin should not be used for this condition.
ULORIC;
is a prescription medicine used to lower blood uric acid levels in adults with gout.

I have gout. I've only had 2 attacks in 5 years. One severe--one not so bad. Cherries help resist the build up and removal of the crystals that form and cause the swelling. Red meat can contribute to the development of gout, but most importantly the juices from red meat-e.g. beef broth or gravy. Asparagus and mushrooms are bad too. It is considered to be one of the most painful things someone can experience, and for sure the most painful arthritis. I control mine with diet and medication (allupurinol). I've never had to take vicodin or percocet for my gout. He should really research his diet and eliminate and add as appropriate.
