welcome
i too had these same concerns before starting forteo. i am 53 years old and from what the drug company tells me i am young to be at this stage. do i have side affects, yes, but they are manageable. my doctor and i weighed out the alternatives and taking a drug for 2 years is a far better alternative than breaking bones and quality of life. do i enjoy giving myself a shot every nite, no, but i do it knowing that it will improve my bone density and feel it is well worth the inconvenience.
that is great news.. how are you making out with the forteo at this time? i am due to start Forteo tomorrow!
Wishing you the best
So far, so good. I'm just about done with my sixth pen. I guess I'll be getting a new bone scan in a few months to check on my progress.

I have the same concerns, but as marjier said you have to weigh the benefits against the odds of the side effects. This was basically my last chance for my bones as I have had so many fractures. I was having lots of tummy problems, but was taking my shot in the AM, but now take it before I go to bed. This has helped. Hope if your bone density warrants its you give it a try.
one of my issues is definitely stomach related but taking my shot as the last thing i do before going to bed allows me to sleep off most of the affects. i also have insomnia on this med, and take a sleeping pill really helps. i am on pen 4 of 26 but will stick it out regardless. hope you can stick with it, and make sure to see your doctor as i do regularily to manage your side affects. keep in touch
i am 55 and have had oseoporosis for 7 years since going through menopause. i fell two months ago and fractured my pelvis in three places. it has been a difficult and scary experience. i never want to go through this again. my doc really want s me to go to forteo... a little hestiant due to the bone cancer warning. but if i fractured at 55 so easily and rehab is been trying. i feel that the side effets at this point are worth the chance that i might be able to build my bones so that i won't fracture as i age. since i am fairly young to have such severe case of osteo, i really hope the bone density improves with the forteo. i really think i should give it a try. If anyone has had a serious side effect from forteo, i would appreciate any input. thank you. best of luck to everyone. i know how serious these fractures and recovery can be. I have put all of my energy everyday into trying to get better from this terrrible fracture of my pelvis .. hard to ambulate. i can't believe this disease is so life altering.
let me know how you are progressing with your treatment. very interested in your progress. i hope and pray that foreo is the answer to building your bone mass. i hope to start the drug soon. i, too, have apprehension, but feel i don't have much of a choice looking forward to the future. after fractureing my pelvis two months ago, i never want to go through this life altering experience. i can't help but think of ten years from now and fracturing another bone and having i worse recvoering than this. so i think forteo is the way to go. i am tyring to research as much as possible .. any feedback would be most inlighening for me. thanks
Hi, I just started on my 12th vile. I had a few local reactions on the last vile & reported it to Eli Lilley as requested. Just a little redness the size of a quarter. I too worry about the osteosarcoma, but what are we to do? I think the main reason there are so many warnings on the box & instructions are to make sure everyone is aware in case of a class action suit or something in that order. Meaning you can't say we didn't warn you!. I think you will do fine. Just my thoughts...
My bone loss was due to an inherited gene factor, plus I had a hysterectomy at the age of 22 so no hormones to counter balance. When I insisted my own mother go see my doctor, the first thing he said to me was I had to get a bone density scan because my Mom at 63 was all stooped over from compression fractures. As were her mom & all the sisters. At the age of 43, my loss was already at 43%. I tried all of the other bone building drugs Actonel, Miacalcin etc... None helped. I am suppose to have a bone density after 1 year. Am curious as to the results. That wil be in December sometime. Will try to remember to update everyone on what the results are.
thanks Mary, i found your answerThanks wondering... does the drug company keep in contact with you when you are on this drug. As you say that the drug company told u that you were young to be at this stage. If you don't mind me asking, you say you have side effects... but are managable... can you speak more on the side effects if you like.. thanks so much.
I friended you so you can ask me anything you like in private too, but that has been the only side effect I have had. The company calls you once a month & goes over everything with you & like this past month when I was having a small on site reaction they even had me talk to a nurse at Eli Lilley. They have to do this because it's so new, they have to watch closely for side effects & report to the FDA. This is natural. The osteosarcoma warning is because a few lab rats developed it after being injected with Forteo. I would not let that scare you away. Better to chance it now & get new bone growth, then be a bionic woman with your body full of plates & screws, I have 7 compression fractures in my spine already, & broke 2 ribs sneezing a year ago. Have had lots of fractures, so understand your pain. Your bone density has to be a certain level before they want you to try Forteo. Sounds like you really need it.

Have you tried any of the other bone meds like Boniva, or Actonel? Just wondering because they usually have you take these first. Take care, & good luck with your decision...
