Clonidine doesn't prevent wds, it just keeps BP down and calms you a bit. Once you stop the opiates you may still have wds. It all depends on how much you take and for how long? Did you taper down or quit CT? My Doc says he is now using Zofran to minimize wds. I don't know how well that works, as I never tried it. I have used Baclofen for the shakes of wd and it helped. Or Robaxin helps also. One or the other, not both. Trazodone helps sleep.
But all these drugs only make the wds milder. They don't prevent them. I don't believe anything can prevent them. That's the bummer of staying on opiates too long, the wds.

I, like Thor, have heard about clonidine being used to help with BP and anxiety during withdrawal, yet I've NEVER heard it stops wd.
May I ask what type of opiate you were taking, how much and for how long?
This is quite unusual and if you supply this info, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Clonidine, like many other drugs helps with some of the wd "effects." It does not stop withdrawal.
Clonidine is a "central" acting medication meaning that it acts in the brain. It lowers Blood pressure this way. Since it acts "centrally" it blocks some of the effects of withdrawal that are caused by the nervous system such as anxiety, insomnia, restless legs, nervousness. These are all all nervous system responses to stopping opiates. The nervous system kind of goes into overdrive in opiate withdrawal. This is why Clonidine helps. Because it acts centrally. I hope this helps clarify.
Good luck and congratulations for your decision to come off of opiates. pup
