i amm 44 and had my tubes tied at 23..my son is 25 and my stepdaughters are 21 and 18... my gyn wants to try several procedures to lessen my bleeding and this week he is going into my uterus with a camera..there are also unknown cysts/fibroids on one of my ovaries... Personally i just want to get a hysterectomy and end all of the pain and suffering... does anyone have an opinion good or bad about the hysterectomy process, and after effects?

Dear ladybirdcross,
I do not know the answer to your question but am infact seeking an answer to this question myself. I am 28 and have endometriois and polycystic ovarian disease. I have had heavy bleeding and debilitating pain with my periods since I first start menses at 12 years old. I don't have any children, but still wonder if having a hysterectomy would be the cure I need for this disease. I am curious however about the after effects as well. I take birth control to regulate my periods and it lessens the pain, but am still extremely uncomfortable the majority of the time. Hopefully some one out there will provide us with their experience in this matter...
Sincerely,
Angie

I am curious as well. My doctor doesn't believe there is enough to warrant a scope to confirm endometriosis even though most of my symptoms point to it. My uterus lining was thickened, again, not enough to warrant a scope. I really just want the hysterectomy. I am 40, my son is 21 and I've had my tubes tied for over 10 years. I was able to deal with my monthly issues until my tubes were tied, and now it has just become unbearable. My GYN Nurse Practitioner has done the unltrasound and ruled out fibroids, and a biopsy to rule out cancer. She agrees with a hysterectomy and is the one who believes I do indeed have endometriosis. Instead, my doctor wanted me to take birth control, and that's a whole other conversation. I really just want the hysterectomy.

I have talked to my moms neighbor who had a hysterectomy to get rid of her endometriosis, and she said that was the best thing she ever did. I don't know if that helps. She hasn't mentioned any long term effects.
Also, my mom had a hysterectomy, but hers was for fibroids. She was kind of miserable to deal with for about a year after. I do know she does NOT take any hormones and they took it all out. She has hot flashes, but she is also diabetic and that is a side effect for diabetes as well. She is also glad it's gone.
glad to know i am not the only one... i have decided not to have the other procedures offered and have made an appt. with my gyn for next month to discuss what I want... i just pray the dr. listens and doesn't try to convince me I need a series of temporary expensive procedures..i will check in after my next appt.
Ok, let us know what happens. If you can, ask the doctor what the side effects/ pros/cons of a hysterectomy are. The info would be much appreciated. Good luck!
