... Zyprexa works by blocking dopamine. Well I take dexadrine for narcolepsy and ADHD and it works by increasing dopamine. They don't work good together. I end up having to take 12, 10mg dexedrine because the mechanism used by it is blocked by the zyprexa. Does anyone know of a combonation that might work right together? I have bipolar I, with psychosis
I have narcolepsy and also have bipolar. :( I take zyprexa, which works good for the bipolar.?

Hi Daniel - I, too, have both Bipolar I and ADHD. Are you saying you take12 of Dexedrine (10mg) per day? Is that what the Dr. prescribed? It sounds to me like you may want to find a very good Psychiatrist. Its tough to make a recommendation without knowing more history. But, you should not need that much of the Dexedrine to reach a therapeutic dose. Also, with Bipolar I, typically someone is prescribed both an atypical antipsychotic and an anticonvulsant. The Dexedrine helps to potentiate these meds, as well. I take both Seroquel and Trileptal, in addition to the Dexedrine, and this combination has worked well for many years. It takes some time to find the right combination for each person, but its so nice when that right combo is found... like a miracle. Good luck! Jillian

I am prescribed that much and I will try to explain. One of the ways anti-psychotics work is by partially blocking the receptors for dopamine and serotonin. Dexadrine works by increasing the amount of dopamine and serotonin. That's the simple, but true version. I have tried many of the anti-convulsant and they work great until I try any kind of stimulant and I get manic from, like one cup of coffee. I quit the anti-psychotic for about a week to see if that is what was causing the Dex. to not work hardly and it was. The dex. started working where I could take 10mg and it would be fine and last for close to four hours. When I am on an anti-psychotic I have to take 30mg at a time and it only lasts for two hours. Right after the dex. peaks I get so sleepy. I am hoping one of the anti-psychotics I try will not block the receptors so much so I can find some balance in my meds. However I have never tried an anti-convulsant and anti-psychotic together, maybe at lower doses for both of them. I will mention that to my Psychiatrist. Thanks!
Hi daniel - I do understand the mechanism you are describing, and I definitely wasn't judging you on the amount you were taking. Just trying to be helpful, so that you don't have to be on so many meds to get the therapeutic dose! I also get sleepy from the Dex. sometimes! But, I've only taken the Trileptal & Seroquel, so am not familiar with the med. you're on. I had Effexor send me into manic episode so I understand how tough it is to find the right meds. I hope you get some answers. Good luck!
