AmethI have high cholesterol and my doctor wanted to start me on statin drugs?But I've heard from a health service provider who recommended us to try Hypocol or Cholestin as it will not cause any damage to the liver. I asked my doctor and he said both Hypocol and Cholestin also contain small amounts of statin which can also cause damage to the liver. So who is correct?
Also between cholestin and hypocol, which is a safer product that does not contain statin and yet will help to lower cholesterol.

Your doctor is correct. Hypocol, also known as Cholestin, contains red yeast rice, a natural source of mevinolin. Mevinolin is the active ingredient of a statin drug called lovastatin.
No severe toxicities of red yeast rice at high doses have been reported. However red yeast rice should be used cautiously in those with liver disease (as it works in the liver).
