I have a herniated disc and am in severe pain I am going to see my PCP tomorrow to discuss pain medications. I can't take any opiates because they make me violently ill and I can't take Advil because of my gastritis and how it burns the inside of my stomach. What pain medication choices are there left? Please help! Any suggestions at all are welcome

Ask about Gapentin/neurontin. I don't think that it's an opiate. I have a bad stomach and it didn't bother my stomach. I took it for nerve damage that left me in constant pain. I took it and slowly built up to where it controlled pain. It took a few weeks for it to work, but it was well worth it. For what it's worth my condition is called "the Suicide Diease".
My son has the same back problem and he uses a mix of vallium and cyclobenzaprine. Under doctor's care, you can mix two things to get the desired result. He goes a spinal clinic at a major VA hospital. He also has a bad stomach. I wish you luck

Have you ever tried taking Zofran and an extremely low dose of an opiate to see if that helps with your pain? You could try Ultram, it's similar tonan opiate pain medicine but it may not make you sick and could possibly help you immensely. If Ultram isn't an option then you can try Acetaminophen, muscle relaxers, or neurontin. Good luck!

Ultram (tramadol) and Ultraset ARE opiates. I don't know why anyone would suggest them as an alternative to opiates if they are in fact opiates themselves. I'm also in the same boat as JennyLynn... opiates make me very sick and I've had chronic arthritis and sciatic pain for years. I used to be ok with Ultram but I'm on it now for a bout of diverticulitis and it's making me as sick as I would be with Percocets. I've had SO MANY doctors ask me what I want to do about my pain... why don't THEY know?? They're the pros... I know I'm not the only one who can't take opiates. So besides ibuprofen, acetaminiphine and naproxen, there's NOTHING else??
