I have a five month old baby and have been breastfeeding and supplementing with formula. I just found out that i have Grave's. my doctor wants me to take Methimazole. can i breast feed? can i take the pill in the morning and breast feed after 12 hours. I work during the day and can pup and dump.
there are research showing that minimal amount will be fed to baby after several hours.
I really would like to nurse couple of more months but do not want to take any risks with my baby's health

Methimazole and Breastfeeding
Some studies have suggested that taking up to 20 mg of methimazole during breastfeeding does not affect thyroid function or intellectual development in the nursing child. It is unknown if higher doses are safe for use while breastfeeding.
Taking a methimazole dosage just after a feeding and waiting three or four hours before another feeding may reduce the infant's exposure to this medication, although this is not ideal for newborns, who typically feed more often.
Many docs feel comfortable prescribing methimazole during breastfeeding, provided that the infant is appropriately monitored, especially for rare but serious side effects of methimazole, such as low blood cell counts.

You're batting a thousand Rajive! Well done!
from Wendy :)
Thanks Wendy, with a thousand I would retire... take care!
i dont know much about graves so here is a question to try to help your question. can u wait a litl bit b4 starting the med so you can pump and freeze it til needed so baby still gets the milk and u wont have to worry about the baby getting the med in his or her system at all. i breast fed my oldest dr every two hrs since born at 5lb so you can pump quite a bit and freeze and deprost as needed. then u will not have to worry at all if it has an effect? thats my question or suggestion. best wishes
Jamie, one would have to seek medical advice before freezing the med, some meds are sensitive to being frozen & thereafter being thawed.
I don't know about Methimazole.
Hi Rajive! Jaime's suggestion is to stockpile the milk before using the new medication. If Maria's able to pump frequently, then she'd have a good supply of drug-free milk for the baby in the freezer. The frozen breast milk will last for at least a few months. No need to worry about the drug in the baby or the milk if done this way.
Great answer, Jaime! from Wendy :)
Thank you wendy I figure the baby is 16 monthes I understand the nutritienal value. And if you are wanna keep that as well as the benifit to you pumping is good for weight loss and tightening stoomache muscle I quit breastfeeding my oldest at 4wks she had group b strep so I blamed myself and switched her to formula. My second since I blamed the strep on myself with the first I went right to formula 7 changes it took to find one she could take I give big prps to u for doing a wonderful thing for your child so if you freeze and thaw as much as u can then swith too regular milk. You won't have to worry about the childs contact with your med. If you have time b4 starting the meds. That is up to you and the doc. Best wishes. Jaime
Sorry about the visual prob your little angel is 5 month s if you ran out of milk id put on like isomil which is soy based or alimentum which is a predigested easy n the belly formula premixed liquid a bit expensive unless you are on wic {very helpful} for cost. Tc
Thanks Wendy, I did not know this could be done, kudos to some new info, thanks a ton.
