I had a Nissen Fundoplication last year for severe acid reflux. I have had chronic diarrhea since the surgery. My Gastroenterologist told me that it sounds like dumping syndrome. I would have diarrhea just within 15-20 minutes or so after eating a normal sized meal. He prescribed Bentyl and I have only been taking it for a few days, and don't take it every day. Since this works, would it be best to assume I have IBS or could this still be dumping syndrome. Just wondering if anyone knew this answer.. I never had abdominal cramping, just severe urgency, and stomach gurgling, and sudden urge to have a BM. Since this medication, I go only 1 or 2 times a day not even related to meals. thanks

in 1975 I had lots of my stomach removed and surgery on the bowel for some time after that I would get up and have to go to the bathroom as you say within about 10-15 minutes, since I had surgery I was seen at the university by GI surgeons and all GI people they gave me medication for about a year which after about 2 years things subsided, but the doctors told me at the time I was having what is known as dumping syndrome, If memory serves me correctly they said it can happen by also vomiting shortly (15 minutes after a meal) I think I was placed on Bentyl , take good care and best wishes
I want to add this- I would have the urge to empty my stomach within at least 15 minutes of eating, I felt bloated once I went to the bathroom it improved until I eat again but once I was placed on the medication the episodes improved I took the Bentyl for over a year on a daily basis then they put me on the 6 small meals which has helped a lot I wish you the very best

I have never heard of some of these things, but my husband has had the same problem for years! No doctor has suggested anything like dumpinng syndrome, IBS, or taking a med for it. I read up on all of it & would be my suggestion that if the medicine is working ,take it & don't worry about it. In the future try going without it for a few days, & I'm sure you will know if it's till working or not. I will suggest my hubby talk to doctor about this Bentyl
good luck to you...

I know what you mean. I had that too when I had my GB removed, but that was in 1994, what I am experiencing now is different. It is like dumping syndrome somedays it is immediate, and sometimes it does not happen. The Bentyl seems to help, as I have not had any of the episodes since I began it a week ago. I am seeing a Gastroenterologist, and this Bentyl was the last resort. I just pray it continues to work, but not sure if you can take it for a prolonged time. Thanks for your help... May God Bless You too...
