For a DVT your doctor might order another doppler (ultrasound) of your leg before discontinuing meds. This is primarily important if you have any lingering side effects, risk factors such as varicose veins, or if you tested positive for any genetic thrombolytic factors. If not, the standard of care is to simply continue coumadin for 3 - 6 months. Research indicates that clots generally dissolve within 3 months but some Drs like to keep patients on coumadin for 6 months just as an extra precaution. Hope this helps.
