My fiance, is using the drug and she can drink vodka like a sailor, I am one step from leaving her for good. I was assured by the doctor that she would get sicker than she ever had been and that she would never drink again after she drank with Antabuse. Well she can drink down a glass of milk in front of me taking the Antibuse so I can witness it, and two hours later drink a half a bottle of vodka and get smashed and have no side affect whatsoever.
I have actually went to a PDR and looked at the [ OP 706 ] pill marking to determin if she was taking asperin or something to fool me. Is this drug a total placebo or does it actually work for it intention ? Gregory Concerned.

sorry to hear your dilemma. I was actually advised against taking the antabuse in the end as i have impulsive behaviour and the doctors were concerned i would still take a drink on top of antabuse as a means of self harm.Obviously they are ment to make you very ill . I do not understand why your wife is still able to drink on top of it. If it was a placebo, the doctors would surely have given them to me. Iam actualy now on acamprosate which is a blocker of the cravings part of the brain... seem to work so far. good luck gregory concerned. x
I don't know exactly what of 4 tricks of the trade she's using, but I do know of 2 things for shur"... (1) that ain't antabuse... or... (2) it ain't reaching her stomach . Whatever She's doin' , she better not make a mistake , and Mister , you might just as well hit the road , 'cause she's not ready to stop, and if you force her to with antabuse , she'll just drink everytime your back's turned. I can help, and so can htwooh... but I think you know what's gotta happen... AA's the only way! ! Sacosam
IF SHE IS NOT GETTING SICK SHE IS NOT TAKING THE PILL. The reaction caused by Antabuse and the chemicals produced by alcohol consumption at the liver are inevitable if she is really taking the pill. She is not taking the pill no matter what she says. If an active alcoholic or addict has their mouth open they are most likely lying. Takes one to know one...

I agree with htwooh, she must not be taking the real pill or she is somehow getting rid of it when you turn your head. I just passed the 30 day mark on this drug. I had a bad day last Friday and said screw the sideaffects and had 2 beers. BIG MISTAKE... I keep waiting for the nausea and vomiting but it never came. What came was a severe case of pounding, racing think I am having a heart attack heart palpitations. I actually suffer from panic attacks so it took me a minute to realize it was the Antabuse that was causing this. I was in such bad shape that my boyfriend had to drive me home (less than 7 miles) because I was so hyped up and out of it I could not drive myself. I will never do that again. You mentioned what it said on her pills (I can't remember exactly what that was), my say "OP 705". If this is different from hers it does not necessarily mean anything. It could be a different mg. or a different manufacturer. I don't know where you are.

Hello Gregory Concerned. I can safely say that if she were to be taking antabuse and drinking along with it, the chances of her feeling this drug working are as to say the the moon is there and the sun will rise in the morning. I drank with antabuse, and did so for a period of time. As yubugen said, you'll feel as if you're going to die. Its that scarey a feeling. The heart races, your pounds, you sweat, shake, its very very real. And can kill you if enough alchole is consumed. Your system will shut down. Literally and theres nothing you can do. Antabuse works. Its been around for years. And most probably will be for many more to come.best to you.

Sorry to hear about your wife. I have been taking Antabuse for 3 weeks now and I have not had a drink since November 22. I have not even attempted to drink because I am afraid of the side effects. I hear they are very nasty. What dosage is your wife on? Maybe the dr. needs to increase her dose. I only take 250 but some people have to take 500 mg. I would definitely discuss this with her dr. Antabuse only works if the person wants it to work, it is not a cure. I personally tried the acamprosate first but it did nothing for me as helping with the cravings, I still drank like a fish while taking it. The Antabuse will not help her if she does not want to help herself. Is she in counseling, AA or something along those lines. More importantly does SHE want to quit drinking or is she trying to do it for someone else? That may be where the problem lays because if she does not want to quit drinking for herself noone is going to be able to make her. I wish you both the best of luck. I hope you have a happy holiday season.
Sorry I misunderstood she is not your wife but finance (sp) but the rest I stand by. It sounds like you are giving her plenty of support and that's great. My boyfriend was not very supportive in the beginning because he is a drinker but he has since come to be my most supportive "crutch". He will not let me drink and when I reach for a beer is the first one to say do you really want to do that after you have gotten this far. He is absolutely right. Do not press her, just be there for her when she needs you and believe me she will. Again, I wish you both the best.
The advice of your fiance wanting to stop is the most important. I agree with yogoben... well done. If she is stopping just because your relationship is on the rocks and she feels pushed to a corner she will no doubt continue at some point in the future even is she does stop short term. sorry to say this but she really has to have hit a rock bottom and want alcohol out of her life for good, for her, no one else.talk with her and the doctor. I really hope you can solve the issue for the your fiance and for yourself and the relationship. x claire
Hey Yubugen: Let's see now nov. 22 to Dec.22, WOW! a whole month you've been sober. Talk to us when you got about 10 years sober. Ain't never gonna happen is it, as it's not in your plans is it???

Hey Sacosam - Are you always so nasty? When I first started posting on here I actually "looked" up to you. After what you first posted to this gentleman "Mister you just might as well hit the road... " "I can help... " She ain't gonna stop, etc. and now what you posted to me "WOW... a whole month" "Ain't never gonna happen ... not in my plans... " WHO exactly do you think you are? God? You don't know me or my plans. Just because you have 10 years sober does that mean you don't think anybody can do it just because they choose not to use AA? I thought this forum was to help people not put them down and make them feel worthless. Please don't bother to respond to this because I really don't care WHAT you have to say. You are not a nice person. I'll make it all by myself because I WANT too.

You should really think before you offer "advice" I think in the end you may end up doing more harm than good. As I asked please just leave me alone. I have deleted you from my friends list because that is not what you are. All the same - happy holidays to you and yours. This is really not the place for this comment as it does not apply to the original question asked but I feel a personal attack on someone should not go unquestioned.
Yubugen: If I came across as nice to you , I sincerely apologise, I did not mean to be nice , I meant to be REAL. I have 22yrs. , 7 mos. sober. It cost me near 40 years of my life... Wasted... Destroyed... Ruined , by booze. If you think for one minute that I'm going to be nice to you when I know you're still sucking your life out of a jug of alcohol , you are gravely mistaken. Right now , because you think you got it under YOUR control, because you're trying to lure others into YOUR way of thinking [who is clairzee, one of your deciples... What I think of you is that you've got to look up to see a snakes belly, All the good ex drunks... The nice people [who can smile and say "been there , done that"! are the one's who are sitting in AA's chairs, laughing and joking with other AA's, and Sponsers. I don't know you're age (young , 30-40 perhaps... but I will try to pray for people like you...

and to Clairezee, may I say congratulations on you're ability to avoid "antabuse", but acamprosate is nothing more than a moneymaking drug that will destroy your brain. Please use the internet to study this drug, both the negative side and the posative sides. Good luck, and may God Bless, and Guide You! Sacosam... "who, at age "72"! is still known as "Wild Bill"!
