It's unfortunate that no one with a thyroid problem has responded. If the synthetic thyroid medicines have not helped... have you ever considered trying something like Armour Thyroid.
Desiccated (dried) thyroid is a combination of hormones that are normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Desiccated thyroid is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own.
Desiccated thyroid treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Desiccated thyroid is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), and is also given as part of a medical tests for thyroid disorders.
Desiccated thyroid should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems.

Two Partial thyroidectomies; Still have another tumor. Went from 130 lbs to 220 lbs. Found I had an allergic reaction to "acacia". Most of the generic levothyroxine tabs have acacia as the cellulose. I found that Sandoz does not use acacia but uses pine in cellulose. I had a test done by an allergist; am highly allergis to acacia; so, I now only purchase Sandoz products. You must check with pharmaceutical companies for ingredients of meds. You can get the telephone numbers from pharmacists. I have lost over 50 pounds by making this change, am still losing weight. Now, no more diarrhea, stomachaches, and horrible, itchy varicella -type rash. Lesions are clearing up.

I have had iodine 131 treatment for graves disease years ago and they still cant get my levels to even out... it's frustrating. I have gone from 25mcg of synthroid to 250 mcg and they say I am still not right. My doctor is begrudgingly going to let me try a new medication if the 250 doesn't set me straight because I demanded that they give me something else if the synthroid isn't cutting it after almost 3 years maybe it just NEVER will. I was in thyroid storm in late 2008... got treatment in early 2009 and here it is 2012 and I'm still sick. I'm so tired of feeling so ... well... tired. I'm only 26 and I am less active then my 50 something year old mother! (she would kill me if I told her age)

I am shocked and amazed that there are still Dr., especially Endos, that are advising radiation, in essence killing the thyroid, or any form of removal, be it some or all of it. Your stories blow me away and make me realize how lucky I am to be in Upstate NY and have the Endo I have. His stance is it is never killed and only removed in the case of cancer of the thyroid. To anyone newly diagnosed: You can be regulated with meds. It may take time and patience, but an attentive Endo can do it. I've been dealing with hyperthyroid (Graves) since about the age of 25. Didn't get a proper diagnosis till about 33, and am now 50 and have finally went into remission, no meds at all for 1 full year!! I am a good wt., Im 5'7" and stay about 150lbs. My jean size is about a 7-9. Thank You so much Dr. Arce!!! He told me killing and removal is to make it easier for the Dr. to deal with.

Sorry, Just read this! Because I have been missing out on grapefruit (which I love) after being told it affects synthroid so just wanted to google and recheck status. So I had RAI after Graves disease diagnosis 1991 and it is now 2013! I lost ALL my hair in 1992 and my thyroid fluctuated constantly to where I had to get rechecked and change dosages every 3-6 months! Constant Craziness!!! About 5yrs ago I found a good Endo doctor and he found I was severely deficient in VitAmin D and amazingly the last 4 yrs I seem to be more stable with my thyroid levels, but look how many years it took. I also gained 40 lbs and cannot seem to stop feeling tired but at age 59 I think I am just kinda giving up with it all!
