Swelling of the ankle or feet is a serious side effect. You should follow your doctors advice and take him to the ER.

Suzanne, I greatly appreciated your quick response. I took my husband to the emergency room yesterday. They did all kinds of bloodwork and checked his vitals, consulted with his infectious disease doc and neurosurgeon and sent us home with a script for lasix (20 mg). I'll be monitoring for signs of improvement. ID doc says he needs to be on an intraveneous antibiotic for at least another 3 weeks.
