My mother was prescribed hydromorphone and hydromorph contin and over the past year she has gone WAY down hill. Her memory is shot, no motivation etc. She has a long history of addiction *and* an even longer history of denial. She said it was the hydromorph contin that was causing her problems and has stopped taking that. At first she said she stopped taking them all but after I did some digging, she said she still takes the hydromorphone "sometimes".
She was prescibed these for spinal stenosis... but her addiction issues are far greater than her physical pain.
Is hydromorphone dangerous for an addict? How do I get her off of this drug??
How to get a family member to realize they are addicted to hydromorpone?

Hydromorphone is an opiate just like all the others. If she is addicted and abusing the meds then it is dangerous. Only she can make up her mind to admit she has a problem. Aside from talking to her doctor, not much you can do without her cooperation. Have a heart to heart with her and maybe she will respond favorably. There are alternatives medications for pain that are not narcotics and not addictive. Encourage her to investigate these alternatives with her doctor. Maybe she will let you attend the appointment and you can express your concerns. I'll say a pray for you and hope you get her help soon.

maggietw, Unfortunately there is little you can do for your mother unless she wants help. The best thing you can do now is take care of yourself. An addict affects everyone they come into contact with especially those that love them the most. Do you have permission to talk to her Dr? Hang in there it is hard but it can be done. You are entitled to a life and happiness. Right now taking care of you is the best thing you can do for your mother God Bless surfdog
I did talk to her doctor once before a couple of years ago. Mom came for a visit and was stoned on valium for the whole time. At least I think that is what it was. I called her doctor (a bit angry) wondering why she had given her 30 valium knowing she was an addict. Anyway, her doctor is aware of her addiction. I was recently informed she has been seeking valium again, on top of the other drugs but her doctor refused her.
Thanks for your post. It helps a lot.

welcome maggietw, and im sorry for the pain of your familys struggle, i too struggle from opiates, at first it was taken for a very legit reason, and now, i have to take them to feel normal and not go into withdrawls. im dependant on percocet 10/325, i was taking at times 13-16 1/4 pills a day. for about a yr ive been batteling and forever failing taper plans given to me by family here at dc. i call them my family, because they are my only support system. of course my drs supporting me and prescribes me what i need, and we do a med review and refill weekly. its all trial and error, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly for others. sometimes never. i knew once i began to have to take bigger amounts at a time, and just to feel normal and function. this is not an easy thing to do, very painfull and in order to be a success, we need alot of positive encouragement, and understandibng. you should read up on alot of the forums on this site, mabe go to al anon, for familys of addited people.
Thanks for your post and insight. Mom and I have always been close but since she started taking this drug, she has detached a lot from the family. Her memory is very poor and does not remember conversation to conversation so makes talking to her very difficult.
She has been addicted for years to everything that she has taken and has a very distinct pattern of behavior. She will become impossible and once her back is against the wall, she will convince everyone she is fine and no longer needs it etc... never getting the help she needs.
I have dealt with it my whole life. I am now looking after myself. I am getting councelling which is helping.
Helpmehawaii, I hope you are successful in your recovery. I am also an addict (alcohol) and have been sober 11 years. There is no greater gift than sobriety. I just wish everyone could experience it.
Peace and love to you
Amen, 11 yrs, im 9 yrs sober off of meth and alcohol. now just to put this struggle behind me. what was i thinking??? taking pain pills for pain was not the best decision for a person who already had an addictive personality. i will get thru this, this site has been for me a God sent gift. i will keep everyone posted on my newest taper plan. it is very very slow, but with it being that way, i feel im more able to succeed, take care, helpmehawaii

Addiction is a disease like any other disease, usually we didn't ask for it, starts out as somthing else, and before we know it,BLAM! Just add it too the list of things we have no control over. As the others on here have stated, the best thing you can do it take care of yourself. Please take that to heart and do so.
I have cervical and lumbar stenosis and it is very painful, that's a given. What treatment one uses for the pain is a personal choice as everyone is different. And understand that you can't make your mom do anything, it must come from her, be her decision.
I wish you much happiness in your life,
Yhe Happiest Sweetest Hippie

Thanks for your response. I am not in the same country so is hard for me to do much other than councel her on the phone. She was offered a day program to address the issues but seems she is finding excuses not to go. Intellectually I know there is not much I can do for her and this has been an ongoing issue for years. I am just tired I guess. I joined another support forum to help deal with my helplessness. I am so tired of these drugs ruining my family.
Thanks for your prayers.
Yes the miles between you make it very difficult to help, but don't despair. Taking care of yourself through getting support is vital. Continue to be honest with your mother and pray a little. It truly helps. Here if you need someone to talk to,
