need to know how much ativan is ok for someone in one day

It's hard to say, it depends why they are taking Ativan, if they are already Benzo tolerant, and whether or not they are taking other drugs that can amplify Ativan. For example, opiates and sleeping meds, such as Ambien, can amplify Ativan so you would use less of either Ativan or both. Now if the person wasn't taking anything else, and they had severe anxiety that needed constant medication, I would say 4 mg a day is the max dosage. I would give them 1 mg 4 times in the day. But that can be too much for many people. One clue is that Ativan isn't made as less than 1/2 mg, so 0.5 mg is the smallest dose considered to be effective. I think the largest is 2 mg because there is a 2 mg pill. Someone who is Benzo tolerant and needs Ativan badly may be told to take 2 mg 4 times a day. Again, it's hard to say. As with all drugs, the right dose for the problem is very good, too much can be deadly, and not enough is pointless.
