Yes dealing with bipolar and antidepressants is very tricky. The maximum recommended dose for Lexapro is 20 mgs though research failed to show a benefit of the 20mgs over the standard 10mgs a day dose. So you are really at a max dose. If you are still depressed after 5 weeks of Lexapro, then it is possible that this is not the antidepressant for you.

Effexor affects two brain chemicals, serotonin and norepinephrine while Lexapro only effects one, serotonin. You may benefit from an antidepressant similar to Effexor such as Pristiq. It affects both chemicals. I take Pristiq with excellent results, though as you know, everyone responds differently. Unfortunately, one size does not fit all when it comes to an antidepressant. It is a trail and error sort of deal. I think since you have been on the lexapro for 5 weeks then you may want to discuss alternative antidepressants with the doctor.

You could also consider adding a medication such as Abilify which enhances the antidepressant and controls mood swings. I take Abilify with my antidepressants and it works very well. I no longer get mood swings and have been stable for a long time.
