Morphine which is what Kadian is, can stay in your system 3-7 days depending on how fast you metabolize. In the future, I would not recommend that you take your sisters medication. Kadian is very strong and can poison an opiate naive person on the first dose. It is intended for those who are opioid tolerant and that means to be taking a good amount of opioid on a daily basis. It is a long acting drug and can be effective for up to 12-24 hours. It is not a safe practice to take opioids that were not prescribed for you and your sister should not be giving her medicines away as she will be short herself as they only give you enough for a months supply. In the future if your back is hurting and OTCs are not providing relief, I'd recommend that you see your PCP or go to an Urgent Care or ER to be seen if you cant see your Dr and the pain is severe.
