If I was going to do some serious walking, how long before starting should I take combivent. Would it help my breathing while walking?

Combivent contains a combination of albuterol and ipratropium. Albuterol and ipratropium are bronchodilators that relax muscles in the airways and increase air flow to the lungs - making it easier for you to breathe.
The bronchodilating effects of Combivent should be noticed at around 15 minutes and maximum effect at 1 hour.
The action of Combivent should last 4-5 hours or longer.
Yes it would be a good idea to use your inhaler at the start of your serious walk to prevent becoming wheezy.
