Eowens,
In my hospital, we use Haldol and find it to be very effective. We usually give it IM (by shot) to psychotic patients, especially those who are severly agitated and/or delirious. When given IM, it takes about 15-30 minutes to take effect; when given PO (by mouth), it usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. Hope this helps with your question.

Haldol from what I have read should not be given to people with dementia especially if they are already on other psychotic drugs.
