in otherwords can i take Citalopram Hydrobromide 20mg and feel the same effect i would if i took 0.5mg Alprazolam. would there be any short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety like with xanax?

Hi
The alprazolam should work within an hour but has a short half life and the anxiety tends to rebound back. If it is prescribed 3 times a day it is usually effective,problem is the half life and the addictive properties of it and you can experience precipratory anxiety before next dose. They make time release to help with this now and alprazolam should never be stopped abrubtly and like psychmajor says the same with citolapram,,do not stop suddenly if you been on it for more than 2 weeks and it can take a couple of weeks for it to work. Alot of times doctors will prescribe a small dose of a benzo with it until it kicks in. Good Luck.

you know, i wanna add that both have the same effect on anxiety. Benzos are fast acting so its easier to go through these to find whats best for you but they are addictive and if you take them daily you WILL go through bad withdrawals if you deside to stop taking the meds. Antidepressants take a longer time, then you have to change the dosage so by the time your really done with 1 antidepressants itssomething like 1-3 months. Im more infavor of an anti-epileptic as a first line of drugs for anxiety (im not on one but thats because i cant prescribe my own stuff and have to tlk to a psychiatrist tomorrow)
