How dangerous is it to take Boniva if you have a hiatal hernia, or if you have problems swallowing?

has anyone out there been treated with Boniva, Reclast, or Caltrate, and similar medications with good results. I have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis and my doctor has prescribed Boniva. I read the print out as to what to expect after taking it, and it has caused me to doubt it. i do have a hiatal hernia, but do not take anything for it anymore as I took Nexxium for a year or more and it must have cured my ulcers in my hernia or esophagus. I do have difficulty swallowing sometimes and I am overweight, and also have peripheral arterial problems and have had angioplasty, so I do not know if I need to take something to make me feel as badly as the side effects says it causes. Someone please answer my questions if you have taken Boniva once a month treatment for Osteoporosis. Let me hear how it effects you.

I have a hiatal hernia and had the Boniva 3 month shot for osteoporosis and have had nothing but pain for the last 10 months in my hands and back. I think this med causes more problems than it helps. I now have lumps on the palms of my hands that are very painful and interfering with my everyday life. I'm about to go back to my hand Dr. and see if she will either do the needle aponeurotomy in her office, or else surgery. I do not tolerate pain pills well, because of the hiatal hernia, inspite of taking meds for that.

Hello, & I don't know why I haven't seen your question, but besides Boniva I was on every bone building drug on the market. I have a genentic predisposition to osteoarthritis. I have GERD & take omprazole (which is actually bad because the FDA says proton pump inhibitors now cause more femur fractures), but I can't go without it. Anyway because of my particular problem, my bone density kept getting worse & am now on Forteo shots you give yourself daily for 26 months. I had a DEXA sacn after completling the first year 2 moths ago, & there is new bone growth. If taken properly, Boniva, or Actonel can help most people. You have to take it first thing in the morning when you get up & stay in an upright position for thirty minutes. Drink it down with lots of water. Do not ake any other type of fluids or foods until the 30 minutes have passed & stay in an upright position. Sitting is ok, but do not lay back down.
