It will work for withdrawals from methadone, BUT, a switch to subutex then suboxone is usually handled very specifically by the doctors or clinics. #1 the person must be at only 30 to 35 mgs of methadone or less before they can switch #2 they should be switched to subutex first, and they suboxone or they can actually stay on subutex if the doctor will allow it. Subutex is the same medication MINUS the naloxone that the suboxone has in it. #3 and this is equally as important as the first two, a person should wait til about 72 hours after the last dose of methadone before starting subutex.
The reason is, methadone is also a long acting opiate replacement, it takes a few days for it to completely recede off the receptor sites in the brain, if there is ANY methadone or opiate on those sites, the 2 meds will fight for space on the sites and both meds will be unseated and a really horrible form of withdrawal called Precipitated ( precipitate also means to drop, doesn't just mean moisture from the sky) withdrawal will set it. Neither medication will be relieving the wds until they wear off, this is an awful state to be in. I am a bit confused by your post, I hope I answered some of it. Is your daughter on methadone for opiate withdrawal, or was she placed on if for methamphetamine withdrawal? There are other meds they treat methamphetamine addiction with, such as Provigil and Nuvigil, they are not amphetamines per se, but act in the brain in a similar fashion. I am new to learning about these as treating methamphetamine addiction, but did read about it is wikipedia, no generic for either, they are expensive, but Nuvigil is the cheaper of the two. The advantage of suboxone opiate replacement therapy is that there is supposed to be mandatory addiction counseling, please make sure she goes to that, it really will help her stay clean, and if you can find an addiction therapist now for her, they may know of other treatment/meds if she also has a methamphetamine addiction. God Bless all of you, hope this helps. Pattishan

My daugter was on meth from age 19 til she was 30. Went to jail, they gave her nothing, she didn't have any witdrawls. She was mad as hell at me for her being in jail and making her go to drug court and classes. Plus she had to hold down a 40 hrs wk job go to court 1x mo, they made sure she worked or would go back to jail. She had to take random drug test. She said I saved her life, she is clean now for 8yrs. She swears you don't have withdrawls. Thats just what she tells me and she was bad, even cooking it.

No, I dont think it works for WD's fro meth. Now for methadone withdrawls yes,. or for any other opiate withdrawl,. Not for meth treatment though. I would say that it would probably help but not treat. Check into getting a NA Class for them and see if there is any other medications that will ease the tension and stress. An anti depressant usually helps and lots of sleep and nutrition. Good luck to you both, have faith it will turn around.

Suboxone is for opiate detox not for methamphetamine detox. Methadone is also not for meth detox. The Suboxone and methadone are long acting opiates that "tie" up the opiate receptors in the brain there by decreasing the craving and withdrawal from opiates. Meth that I think you are talking about is an amphetamine type drug not an opiate. To read more about methamphetamine detox try the following site:
