Donepezil is used to treat mild to moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease.
Donepezil hydrochloride is a reversible inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It is thought that it exerts its therapeutic effect by enhancing cholinergic function.
Memantine is used for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia in patients with Alzheimer disease.
Memantine is a NMDA-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking excess activity of a substance in the brain called glutamate, which may reduce the symptoms associated with Alzheimer disease.
As memantine targets a different neurotransmitter system than the cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitors, a combination of both treatments has been proven effective in treating the symptoms caused by Alzheimers disease.
