My husband also had veins unplugged in his heart. About 6 months later his feet, ankles and lower leg started swelling up and got real hard and painful. They have given him Lasix and potassium chloride, to make him pee, and maybe he had water retention or edema.
Just yesterday he talked to his brother and his brother has the same problem. But they told him he has "Lymphodema" (sp?) He said it runs in families. You should check and make sure no other family member is suffering with your symptoms. My husband has been mis-diagnosed, I guess. Unless edema and Lymphodema are the same thing.
Good luck... hope this was helpful to you.

Is that amount of Hydrochlorothiazide keeping your swelling down? HCTZ is a diuretic to keep edema or swelling down. I take 50mg a day! I think the vascular scan will be able to tell you a lot! Atherosclerosis in the arteries in the legs can cause pain sometimes especially when you are walking. It can also cause ulcers to form that are exquisitely painful. Venous ulcers are not usually painful at all. Sometimes if the swelling hangs around for a long time these ulcers will form from the further lack of circulation caused by the addition of the edema and they are difficult to heal so you want to keep the swelling down so those dont form! Make sure you are limiting your salt intake and that you are drinking plenty of fluid unless your Dr told you to limit your fluids. As long as our Dr hasnt limited fluid intake you should be shooting for 64 oz per day! Coffee and tea (black tea)do not count as good fluid replacements because they cause you to lose more fluid than you replace, but water, juice, low salt soups, herbal teas, frozen juice bars-things like this count as fluids.
Shure appreciate You'r Time. The Dr. and I do not communicate very Well,

Thank You Again For Your Time.

You can ask your Dr about some pain medication to use in the meantime. Have you tried any Ultram (tramadol) or Vicodin (hydrocodone)? These might help in the short term. If you need long term pain control you would need a long acting pain med but they usually reserve those for folks with long term chronic pain. I hope you find some relief soon! Ask your Dr if you can have some pain pills!
If you want to try something OTC you could try some ibuprofen or Aleve. Just make sure you have food in your stomach when you take them. If you have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding you should ask your Dr first!
Do you prop your feet up, or are you on your feet alot, the fluid is just sitting, are you feet heavy at times, i would get water sacks around my ankles it use to hurt so bad, but I started putting my feet on 2 pillows and my head lifted up when sleeping and it helped me alot, i would also walk a lot to while the medicine is working I would help with my own circulation will this work for you at this time... vtech10
