I was on xanax for 10yrs, this has been 15 yrs ago. I found a doc that would cut my xanax down every so often and keept doing this til I was off and clean. He did not put me on another med to come off this. The anxiety and panic was there but I did it and was a ble to fuction. Im back on xanax after 15 yrs but have some problems that caused me to go back on it. Find a doc and tell them what happened and you want weened off it. Please keep me updated. I will friend you.

Hey cecelianne,
Please do not just stop this medication cold turkey as in can cause seizures. You need to taper off it over time. To read more about withdrawal from benzodiazepines like xanax try:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzodiazepine_withdrawal_syndrome
Another helpful website might be benzobuddies.com. It is a support group specifically for people going through the throws of withdrawal.
You also have the option of finding another doctor to prescribe your medication. If so, maybe you can get your present doc to refer you to a new doc.
Best wishes,
Laurie

I hope you understood I never said for you to stop the xanax on your own. i thought I made it clear you need to do this under a doc care and taper off. If I was misunderstood Im sorry. I went back and read my answer and I don't see where I could have been misunderstood about doing this under a doc care. Von

But if you are like me and you have made up your mind its time to see if you can come off thats great. Hope it works out for you. Best of luck and God Bless. Vonnie
Congratulations on finding a Dr yrs ago that was willing & understood about you coming off of Xanax... they are quite useful for many people for just as many reasons but MOST IMPT THING IS--- you must be under a physician's direct care to come off of this medication.. You can become extremely ill--from shakes, chills, hot flashes, vomiting, seizures & many other problems that wouldnt fit on this page... ALWAYS check with your pharmacist and they will give you some idea of what could happen when u stop taking different medications including Xanax--- but a MD is your best choice... The way alot of people are abusing, selling, & taking their meds inappropriately the DEA has forced Physician's hands to limit (to the very minimum) how many patients REALLY NEED xanax & how many a day to take...
Expand this post...
taking them with other meds prescribed as well as with OTC meds & any type of alchohol usually intensifies their effects so the Dr's can't afford to be held accountable... BIG reason why healthcare is SO HIGH!! Another reason is the physicians have to pay a TREMENDOUS AMT of malpractice insurance to cover the people that screw things up for others... what i mean is by taking them not as directed by your MD.. Also another big NO-NO most of us are gulty of is sharing our meds with a friend or family member, even if for juz this one tyme!!! Be sure and use same Pharmacy for all your meds and when in ANY DOUBT CHECK WITH YOUR MD--- ALSO YOUR PHARMACISTS ARE QUITE KNOWLEDGEABLE IF NOT MORE ABOUT MEDS... have a good one!!!
