I have been taking vicoprofen for a couple of years for my TMJ and a torn meniscus. My dr. started asking all patients' with a narcotic Rx to take a drug screening; which is fine with me. I took my test today and everything came back clean... including for opiates, which vicoprofen is. I didn't think anything of it, but they looked at me like I was doing something wrong. I called a nurse friend and she said they may think I was "cleaning my sample", even though a nurse came into the bathroom with me. I am mortified and I have no idea why vicoprofen would not show up! It is wierd that I feel like I have to prove I am taking my meds... usually people are trying to find a way out of the drug screening. It was a urine/panel test. Is there a different test they should have used?
Have to prove I am taking an opiate?

^Right, its not necessarily to find out if youre taking OTHER drugs, its to find out if youre taking your prescribed meds, and not selling them on the street. Thats really weird that you didnt show positive for opioids if youve been taking hydrocodone for years. My best guess is that the tests didnt work properly. Ive had bad experiences with panel tests, and ive heard HORROR stories about their shite percision. Im lucky now to be associated with a facility that does a 'lab test'. I would say you should confront your doc about it. Tell him that you take your meds and (if he deems it necessary) you could go to the Court Substance Abuse Program somewhere near where you live (chances are if you live in a city with a courtroom, you have a CSAP facility or something similar that does DTs) and you can take a 'lab test', which not only tests for a positive/negative of a drug, it also tests for the amount of drug in your system.
Thanks for the help. My dr. office is sending my urine test away to a lab, to check for the opiads, so hopefully that will (better) clear it up. I spoke with everyone at the office and they didn't seem that concerned, but I don't want anyone thinking bad of me, so I think it is more in my head. But, I just can't believe a test wouldn't pick it up. I will definitely ask for a lab test for now on, if I am required to take a test. I don't think I should have to. I am really taken about, with the whole situation. Thanks to everyone for responding! I am definitely more at ease, hearing the horror stories with the panel tests.

Thanks for posting this question, I am "passing" my UA's at the VA and I should be coming up positive for hydrocodone and benzo's... I have been retested 3 times and have had people watching when I take the pills but alas no drugs are showing up during the test. They decreased all my meds and accused me of diverting my drugs, despite them counting my pills left and watching me take them.
Now I have to prove I am taking the drugs... This is proving to be far harder than I even imagined on my limited income.

Thanks so much! I am just so surprised that the medicine did not show up on the test though; since it is considered to be in the opiate family (vicoprofen). It is discouraging that I am taking my medicine as prescribed and then have to prove it. But, I completely understand their point of view, with the amount of prescription deaths' overwhelming the country. I agree with the testing, but shocked at the results. This is definitely something the government should look into regulating and tightening up. I am not sure what the panel test was looking for. But, the 1 Rx medicine I am on, was not picked up. That is kind of scary! Thanks again for your help/advise, I am very perplexed with the situation.
