Have suffered from severe esophageal spasms for 5+ years and have had a chronic sore throat for 2.5mos. I've had a complete heart check then ear/nose/throat check, and finally a complete physical. Today I had an upper endoscopy. The doc toid me to quit taking enalapril.

After many years of esophageal spasms, I believe I've discovered the cause. I used to take Boniva monthly & had esophageal spasms sporadically. Nothing I could track or that I connected to Boniva. Several months ago, because of rising medical/medicine costs, I asked my Dr. for a generic equivalent of Boniva and was given Alendronate, to be taken weekly. The esophageal spasms increased to weekly. After all the testing described above, with nothing helping, I started tracking the spasms, discovering that they started every Tuesday (sometimes occuring on Wed. and Thurs. as well, but ALWAYs on Tues.). I was taking Alendronate on Mondays. I informed my Dr. that I would no longer take that medication and she agreed that esophageal problems can be a side effect. The last spasms I had were on Tues., Wed., Thurs. of last week. We'll see what the following week brings without taking this drug on Monday.

Thank you Mary632009. Yes, HBP, so was concerned when told to stop taking the med. that was prescribed to control it. After MANY ups and downs, I was able to re-start the Enalapril. I believe I stumbled onto the cause of the esophageal spasms. I was taking a drug called Alendronate (generic for Boniva) for osteoporosis. When I was taking Boniva, the spasms were occasional, not regular. After changing to Alendronate, they increased in frequency. Checking online for side effects of Alendronate, I discovered one is esophageal problems. Alendronate is taken weekly instead of monthly like Boniva. I've discontinued use, so we'll see what the following week brings. Thank you for your response, have a wonderful week.
I am glad you found the culprit, but if you have osteoporosis, you must attend to that also. They do have a once a month injection that shouldn't bother you. Don't mess around with osteoporosis. I'm on Forteo already, & it's not fun sticking yourself eveyday. The doctor for your blood pressure could try something different too. There are so many HBP drugs out there. I wish you well, & let me know how you are doing. ...
I agree about the osteoporosis! My Dr. has concurred w/stopping the drug and scheduled me for a Dexascan. If the results show I still need something to treat osteoporosis, she'll find another med. that doesn't have those side effects. My system seems to tolerate Enalapril for HBP very well. I think that was more a problem of too many Drs. not communicating w/each other! Here's to taking an active part in our own health care so we can make informed choices! Thank you :)
I so totally agree! Seems like our physicians all want us to see a specialist for this & for that. You'd think one could handle most problems, and if not at least keep track of what is going on. I think all the biophsphastes can cause the stomach-esophegus(sp) problems, so you may have to go to the shot. Good luck my friend... mary632009
